Luke Creasy

Lucas “Luke” Creasy is a Texas Tech senior with significant achievements in both the classroom and the rodeo arena. He came to Texas from a small hamlet in Alberta, Canada and transferred to Tech after attending Western Texas College in Snyder where he achieved not only outstanding classroom grades but also immediately helped his team tie for second in the College National Finals Rodeo and win the national title the following year. After transferring to Tech, Creasy continued to show his prowess in the classroom and on horseback, sweeping the Southwest Region in bareback competition and winning the coveted “season leader” saddle. His ultimate performance goals include helping Tech win the national title, and also picking up something for himself along the way.

Luke comes from a rodeo family, and his parents nurtured his aspirations for rodeo competition as well as those of his more creative side: drawing western art and writing fiction. His desire to write led him to choose an English major at Tech, with a minor in Secondary Education. Luke has an outstanding ability to balance his heavy rodeo schedule and the demands of the classroom. Dr. Ken Baake, one of Luke's English professors, says, “Luke is a remarkable young man whose enthusiasm for learning and writing has been evident this semester in our English 4360 advanced composition class....Luke is one of those students who is eager to learn and not afraid to make a few mistakes doing so. I imagine he takes the same courageous approach to rodeo activities.” Baake goes on to say that “this kind of tenacity combined with a keen intellect is the key to his success.”

Luke's rodeo coach and equine instructor, Chris Guay, praises Luke as both a goal oriented student and an extremely strong part of the Tech rodeo team, and says that he is well on his way to becoming a freelance writer/instructor and winning both a national individual and a men's team title. Guay believes he can win the national title in 2011. Guay says, “I truly respect him and his peers really ‘look up to him' as a positive role model.”

Luke Creasy is an outstanding ambassador for the sport of rodeo, for Texas Tech University, and for the College of Arts and Sciences. Luke understands that the sport of rodeo is a young man's game, and acknowledges that his writing career may be on hold for a while. Luke says that after graduating in May, he plans to “hit the rodeo trail hard in an attempt to make the National Finals Rodeo in December, 2011.” At the right time, however, we have every confidence that the Tech community will be hearing more about Luke's successes with the written word.
