Just What Is 'Liberal Arts'?

According to spokesperson Kristy Crane, Zippia defines Liberal Arts as "anything identified as such by the International Political Education Database (IPED)." And IPED, which has been superseded by the PSA Teaching and Learning Network, defined itself as a bibliographic database of journal articles relating to teaching and learning in politics, international relations, public administration and related fields. (However, Zippia shows career paths for Liberal Arts majors with the following job titles: teacher's aide, office assistant, accounts payable clerk, payroll administrator, licensed practical nurse, supervisor, store manager, district sales manager.)

At Texas Tech, the Department of Political Science offers the following degrees and certificates:

Zippia's Criteria for Rankings

A Zippia news release described how it looked at the following data from the National Center For Education Statistics (NCES) and from the U.S. Department of Education to understand which Liberal Arts departments offer the best career opportunities:

Career Results

  • Mean earnings after 6 years
  • Mean earnings after 10 years
  • Ratio of people working to not working after 10 years

Liberal Arts Emphasis

  • Percentage of graduating class that are Liberal Arts majors (the larger the better)

School Performance

  • Admissions rate (the more selective the better)
  • Graduation rate
  • Average cost of attendance (lower is better)
  • Median amount of debt

After Zippia obtained that data, it looked at the institutions of higher learning with Liberal Arts majors in Texas. Then it ranked every school for each of the criteria above, with 1 being the best in any given criteria.

Finally, Zippia averaged the ranks for each school to create a "Liberal Arts Quality Index." The school with the best score on that index, The University of Texas at Arlington, earned the distinction of being the Best College For Liberal Arts Majors in Texas for 2019.
