Have you ever asked any of these questions?

What career do I get into so I will make lots of money?

I know what I want to do, but what do I do to get there?

What are the hot careers today? I am an Arts and Sciences undecided major because I don't have a clue about what I want to do. How do I figure it out?

I've already taken all of these science courses to prepare for a medical career, but I've since changed my mind about that career path. What do I do now?

I want to have a career and have time for a family. What is the best way to go?

I don't care about the money. I just want to help people. What jobs can I choose from?

I want an exciting career that allows me to travel. Any ideas?

I'm so worried about post-graduation and not being able to find a job except one where I'll be flipping hamburgers. How can I be assured of getting a good job?

If you would like help with the answers, the Career Center is available to assist you. The following are tips for the 4-year career plan:

Year 1: Self-assessment and career planning activities

Collect, analyze and evalute information about yourself to develop a career position consistend with your personality, abilities, values, interests, education, past work and life experiences. Talk to faculty, advisors, counselors, administrators, and friends. Read a variety of career and business publications. Explore exercises, projects, and psychological tests to narrow down your career interests. use your degree plan electives to take courses in areas of interest to you. Complete a computerized guidance program. Think about the answers to these three questions:

1. What do I want to do?

2. What do I need to do to develop myself further?

3. How can I get the job I want after graduation?

Become active in campus activities that will help you become familiar with career options.

Year 2: Career exploration and investigation activities

Develop a file of information about specific careers and narrow your potential career options down. Accumulate and analyze information about the world of work, office politics, corporate culture, and workforce diversity. Participate in Career Day programs. Create your resume, make contact lists, prepare a cover letter and investifate various job search strategies. Think about the answers to these questions:

1. What do I have to offer an employer?

2. Who needs what I do have to offer?

3. How do I make the employer I am interested in want me?

Continue involvement in extracurricular activities.

Year 3: Gaining career experiences

Explore cooperative education opportunities in your field. Check with the Career Center for on-campus interview schedules and employer listings. Be a leader on campus. Review and update your resume and job search correspondence. Practice your interview skills. Attend workshops on resumes, cover letters, and the interview process. Review alternative career plans.

Year 4: Job search/transition to work activities.

Register with the Career Center early in the year. Put your job search campaign in high gear. Schedule interviews on campus and on-site with as many employers as possible. Discuss career opportunities with faculty and counselors, friends and acquaintances. Keep your career planning log updated with interview results and assessments of your performance during interviews. Consider and review job offers. Accept the job that best fits your career and professional needs. Develop a log of topics that you need to address if making your transition from college to the working world. Perform efficiently, learn corporate culture and move up!
