Credit By Exam
Earning Credit
Texas Tech awards credit in a variety of subjects to student who present minimum required scores of AP and/or IB exams. A complete list of accepted exams and minimum scores is available online in the Undergraduate and Graduate Course Catalog. Undergraduate Credit by Examination.
Advanced Placement (AP)
The Advanced Placement Examination is the final examination for a nationally standardized course offered in a limited number of secondary schools under the auspices of the Advanced Placement Program. The objective of the AP is to allow students to begin work toward college credit while still in high school. Students should check with their high school counselor or principal as to the availability of the AP examinations in their school. The AP exam is offered once a year during May at participating high schools. AP scores are reported to the university in July.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate is an international program of courses and examinations offered at the high school level. Texas Tech welcomes students in the IB program and will grant a minimum of 24 hours credit for an IB Diploma completed with Higher or Standard Level exam scores of 4-7. For those individuals who participate in IB courses, but do not have an IB Diploma, individual course credit may be earned based on the subject and score obtained on specified IB exams. Students must send an IB examination transcript to Texas Tech to receive credit.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
During Red Raider Orientation (and year round), Academic Testing Services provides testing required for state-mandated TSI compliance (ACCUPLACER, THEA) and optional CLEP testing opportunities that allow students to earn course credit for acquired knowledge. These exams require an approved standardized testing environment and official government ID (driver’s license, passport) for admission to the exam. Exams are administered via computer and generate immediate score results, with the exception of the on-campus English CLEP essay which requires more time for grading.
These exams are fee based and payable by check, money order, Visa, or Mastercard. These exams may be offered at other institutions, but scores accepted and policies regarding use of score reports vary between institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to determine if they are taking the appropriate exam and whether official score reports will arrive at the Texas Tech campus in time for advising or registration purposes.
