Essay or Poetry Contest
We’ve given you the story . . . now we want you to make it your own by entering the Summer Reading Essay or Poetry Contest. Consider your reactions to the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, when writing about your thoughts, experiences, agreements, disagreements, and/or points of growth after reading about the experiences of Junior.
Essay Contest Guidelines:
- We invite all new students to participate in the Summer Reading Essay or Poetry Contest.
- Contest Prizes include:
- 1st place - TBA
- 2nd place - TBA
- 3rd place – TBA
- Submit an essay or poem about your reactions to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The form of the submission is open. For example, it could be a personal reflection or a critical review of the book.
- The contest is open to all new students enrolled at Texas Tech University.
- The essay should be from 1000 to 1500 words in length. The poem should be, at minimum, 150 words in length.
- The student’s name should NOT appear on the essay or poem. Attach a separate page with name and contact information.

- Electronically as an email attachment (Word document) to:

OR - As a paper copy, accompanied by an electronic version saved to a clearly labeled disk. Mail these items, together with contact information, to:

- Entries must be received by September 15, 2009. You will receive a confirmation email from Bruce Bills, indicating that your essay has been received. If you do not receive a message, please email Bruce Bills at bruce.bills@ttu.edu.
- The essays will be judged by a committee of faculty, staff, and students. The winners will be notified by mail, phone, or email by October 9, 2009.
- Each essay submitted may be published on the Summer Reading Program Web site and/or in the Daily Toreador.
