Research Interests

Suranga Gunerathne received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 2002. He joined Texas Tech University in 2011 and received Master of Science in civil engineering in 2013. Currently, he is continuing his studies at Texas Tech University as a doctoral student in civil engineering. Prior to joining Texas Tech, Suranga has gained more than six years of experience as a structural design and construction engineer in Sri Lanka. During the master's degree program at Texas Tech University, Suranga worked on a sponsored research project involving load rating of bridge-class culverts according to TxDOT Culvert Design Standards. His research interests include analytical and numerical methods in geomechanics, focusing on linear and nonlinear analysis of soil-structure interactions. For his doctoral degree, Suranga is currently developing a rigorous-yet-easy-to-use analysis tool for behavior of circular storage tank foundation using variational principles. He also works as a Research Assistant of TxDOT sponsored research project that involves load rating of pre-1980 in-service bridge class culverts.
