Safety and Security

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE) has a document entitled "Safety and Security Policy for the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering". This document establishes departmental policy for the protection of life, environment, health, safety, and security of its students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Overall responsibility for administration of this program resides with the chair of CECE.

Because CECE is a large and diverse department, the chair delegates authority to the CECE Safety Coordinator, Brad Thornhill, who bears primary responsibility for administration of this program. He will further delegate responsibility to individuals holding positions identified below.

The lead technician for the structures laboratory, Shannon Hutchison, is responsible for this policy's administration in the structures laboratory, instructional laboratories associated with materials science, geotechnical laboratories, and storage in the vicinity of 4th Street and Quaker Avenue.

The area manager for water resources and environmental engineering, Brad Thornhill, is responsible for this policy's administration in environmental laboratories, water resources laboratories, the fluids laboratories, and the flume project at the East Campus facilities.

These individuals are responsible for ensuring that any authorized personnel including students, staff, faculty, and administrators have received safety instruction concerning the use of facilities, tools, and equipment. In addition, they are responsible to ensure that the authorized individuals use facilities, tools, and equipment in a safe manner. They also maintain facilities, tools, and equipment in safe working order.
