Graduate Student Positions
Web Developer/Designer
The Department is seeking graduate student candidate(s) to fill one or two Web site development positions. These position(s) will be responsible for broad-scale development of CMLL's Internet presence. Individuals with strong backgrounds or abilities in either design or programming are invited to apply, but preference will be given to individuals with demonstrable abilities in both.
Responsibilities:
- Implementing design elements and flow strategies so that all CMLL Web pages have a consistent look and feel, and a consistent, central navigation system.
- Assisting in the coordination of file structures, site layout, indexing and other maintenance strategies.
- Assisting with the development of both external and internal site structures. External includes pages available to the public at large; internal areas are specific departmental resources, available to a restricted population and which may utilize a pass-coded, logue-in gateway.
- Ability to format tables, cascading style sheets, framesets and similar layout mechanisms, following the departmental template strategy.
- Ability to manipulate graphics, design custom elements (such as roll-overs and buttons), and conduct preliminary editing in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Fireworks, and/or similar environments.
- Ability to construct interactive programming elements for the auto-generation of various dynamic or active content Web pages. This may include server-side includes, database calls, stacked variables, and similar compound elements.
Eligibility:
- Must be an employment-eligible graduate student of the University.
- Must have effective English verbal and written communication skills.
Technical Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience in systematically and routinely updating and managing site content is required.
- Experience with various Web and Internet standards, including knowledge of different Web browsers (Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape, et cetera), file size issues, and access strategies.
- In-depth experience and/or knowledge of current Web markup or scripting languages, such as HTML, SHTML, CSS, or Javascript. Familiarity with coding markup for disability compliance is desirable.
- Must possess an understanding of dynamic or active Web content, such as using .PHP, .NET, and central database schemes.
- Experience and functional knowledge with at least one mainstream software application in each of the following areas:

- Must possess the ability to learn and engage new site development strategies and technologies.
- Must possess experience with Windows (2000/XP).
- Some knowledge of implementing security technologies is highly desireable.
- Must have the ability to create organized and detailed documentation for all aspects of site development.
Other Abilities:
- Must possess the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff.
- Must be able to provide extreme attention to detail.
- Must be organized, punctual and highly responsible.

- All applications should include a resume or CV, which clearly illustrates experience and background in Web site development. Applicants should include examples of sites designed or for which programming was developed.

- The initial hourly rate will be $9.50 per hour, and may be higher depending on experience and qualifications.
- The number of hours worked each week is negotiable, but 20* hours or more weekly (thus invoking tuition and fee waivers) are possible. (*In the case of international students, work hours will be governed by the student's visa and work authorization.)
