Classics MA Program
Graduate Advisor: Professor David H. J. Larmour

We offer an MA in Classics, designed for students who wish to prepare themselves for a PhD in Classics or some related discipline (like Archaeology, Comparative Literature, or Linguistics) at another institution, for prospective High School teachers of Latin, and for individuals who want to continue their study of Classical Languages and Culture beyond the undergraduate level. We also prepare students to enter programs in Religious Studies and Theology, which have a significant ancient language requirement.
Graduates have gone on to PhD programs at a variety of institutions, including Stanford, SUNY Buffalo, Purdue, Florida State, Indiana, Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and St. Andrews as well as to related programs in Theological Studies at Harvard and Notre Dame. Others have pursued PhD's in English and Comparative Literature. Many of our graduates occupy prestigious High School Latin teaching positions in Texas (Dallas, Houston, Austin, Amarillo, El Paso) and in other states.
An MA in Classics also serves as beneficial intellectual preparation for Law School, for careers in business--especially where good communication and analysis skills are needed--and for careers in Libraries, Rare Book Collections, and Museum Science. Recent graduates have gone to Harvard Law School and the Library of Congress.
Financial support in the form of a Teaching Assistantship is available, approx. $10,000 in the first year and $11,500 in the second. Summer teaching is often available.
