TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY Graduate School
German M.A. Program
Master of Arts in German Literature, and a combination BA/MBA. The BA/MBA is a Foreign Language program offered in conjunction with the College of Business Administration at Texas Tech. It enables students to prepare for international careers by pursuing a joint degree in German and Business Administration. Students complete a BA with a major in German, and a minor in Business, and then obtain an MBA after one additional year of study.
In addition, the German program participates in the Interdisciplinary Comparative Literature Program leading to the Ph.D.
The German Program conducts the Summer Abroad Program: Berlin and Wust travel program.
The Texas Tech University Library is a recognized member of the Association of Research Libraries, an organization composed of the nation's top scholarly libraries. The Texas Tech Library contains well over 1.3 million volumes, 14,859 subscriptions, and nearly one million units of microforms. In addition, the program maintains a departmental library of selected German texts and other printed resources.
The Advanced Technology Learning Center gives students comprehensive access to the latest computer technology. A modern language laboratory located in the Foreign Languages Building offers a variety of supportive teaching and administrative services.
Most full-time students receive financial aid in the form of nine-month teaching assistantships paying $8000 for beginning M.A. students with fewer than 18 hours of graduate work in German, and $9000 for M.A. students with 18 hours or more. Assistantships also include coverage under the state employees' health insurance program at no cost and qualify holders for resident tuition and a substantial fee reduction. Additional teaching assignments are usually available in the summer.
The German Program awards scholarships to graduate students for summer study abroad. These scholarships are usually over $ 1000.00. Please contact the department for further details.
The expenses of graduate study at Texas Tech are modest. Teaching assistants may expect to pay approximately $750 per semester in tuition and fees for the academic year 1997-98.
Location/Living and Housing Costs
Texas Tech University is situated in Lubbock, Texas, a metropolitan area of 200,000+, with moderate living costs and a wide range of attractions. Lubbock has a housing cost index of approximately 83 percent of the national average. The low cost of living ranks as one of the city's chief advantages, and abundant privately owned housing meets most price and amenity demands. The estimated cost of room and board for a single student is $4510 for the 1997-98 academic year. Lubbock, a major South Plains city, is located 3,200 feet above sea level, and has more than 260 sunny days per year, warm breezy summers, and mild winters. The department is located in the Foreign Languages Building; facilities include a modern language laboratory, computers, and a German Library.
The University and the Department
Founded in 1923, Texas Tech is a state-supported major research university. Its beautiful, spacious campus, one of the largest in the nation, features expansive lawns and impressive landscaping with a unique and harmonious combination of Spanish Renaissance and modern architecture. The University contributes materially to the already active cultural life of the city by sponsoring artist and speaker series, concerts, lectures, and theater productions and by maintaining a museum and a planetarium.
With one of the largest enrollments in the University's College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures is growing rapidly.
Extra-Curricular Activities/Groups
The German Program sponsors Delta Phi Alpha (the German honorary society), a German film series, and the German Club, which coordinates a wide range of activities. Students in the German Club have organized field trips, lectures, fund-raising events, and various social events including holiday parties, and our biweekly Stammtisch and Kaffeeklatsch.
A strong baccalaureate and master's-level preparation in the German language is recommended for all applicants. The Graduate Record Examinations (Verbal and Quantitative) are required by the Graduate School. Prospective applicants whose native language is other than English are invited to request further information. Completed applications for admission should be received by the Office of Graduate Admissions by March 15.
