Frequently Asked Questions

Does your school offer airport pickup?

Many international student organizations offer to pick up new students from the airport. In order to arrange this service, you should contact the someone from your country's organization. To find contact information for the international student organizations, use the following link: Office of International Affairs. From this page use the "International Student Associations" link on the left. When contacting them, please send your flight information.

If there is not an organization for your country, send your flight information to our office. If we are not able to coordinate this service, you can take a taxi from the airport. The taxi will cost about $15.

Can students of the Intensive English Program choose to live either in dormitories or apartments?

Yes, students in the IEP can live on-campus or off-campus. There are some advantages to living on-campus. It is much easier to meet American students and practice your English. You will also avoid dealing with telephone and utility hook-ups. One disadvantage is that you have to sign a contact. It is possible to cancel the contract before you decide to move, but there may be a financial penalty. Make sure you are aware of this before you sign a contract. Questions about on-campus housing can be referred to Housing and Dining Services by e-mail housing@ttu.edu, by telephone (806)742-2661 or fax (806) 742-2696.

When is the application deadline?

We do not have a deadline for applications. However, we recommend that applications arrive in our office at least two months before registration. Some students may need to allow several months to obtain a visa in their country.

What about transportation in Lubbock?

The Texas Tech campus is quite large, but there is a campus shuttle bus and many students walk to their classes or ride bicycles. The area surrounding the university has many businesses within walking distance which cater to students. These include grocery stores, clothing stores, restaurants, bookstores, etc. In addition, there is a bus service that can take you from the campus to other parts of the city. If you live near the campus, you can walk to the university and other local businesses.

Will I have opportunities to meet native English speakers?

Students in our program are encouraged to participate in outside activities with university students and members of the community. IEP students have been active in intramural sports, clubs, drama productions, and academic organizations. There are activities that are organized as part of the IEP program. Outside of the program, each student is free to choose his/her own activities to fit his/her individual interests. Texas Tech University is a large university with a wide variety of organizations and activities. If you are willing to take the initiative, the opportunities are unlimited.

Is it possible for me to enroll in your program for only two months?

Yes, actually this is quite common especially during the summer sessions. Normally, when a student is admitted, we issue an I-20 for 12 months if the student has the financial resources for a full year. This is done even if the student intends to attend our program for a shorter length of time. This gives the student the option of extending their stay without having to process a new I-20. However, if you would like an I-20 for a shorter period of time, that is no problem. When you send your application please state clearly the length of time that you want stated on your I-20 and submit financial support documents to show that you have the resources available to pay all of your expenses for that period of time.

How do I show proof of financial ability?

You can get an official letter from your bank showing the amount of money in your bank account. This must be in English or must be translated and must be in US dollars. You need to have enough money to pay for the Intensive English Program and to pay for your living expenses while you are here. The amount should match our chart depending on how long you plan to attend the program.

If you are not supporting yourself you need to include a letter from your sponsor saying that his or her funds are put aside for the Intensive English Program and your living expenses.

How do I pay my application fee?

You can mail a check or money order to the Intensive English Program or you can call the Intensive English Program at 806-742-3145 and pay with credit card over the phone. If you are in Lubbock you can come by the office and pay with cash, check, or credit card. If you pay with cash you must have exact change.
