The Laboratory Facilities

The Language Laboratory has a variety of different service areas:

The Main Practice Theatre

This is the central area of the Language Laboratory. This large room is filled with practice cubicles and the instructor control console. The Lab has 60 student recorder stations, each with a sophisticated and powerful computer-driven cassette deck.

With these recorders, students can listen, record, and use special enhancements such as bookmarking and sentence or word repeat functions. Classes can use the lab system in groups for a variety of dynamic and enriching activities.

The HelpDesk

This area is the heart of the Language Laboratory. Students and faculty retrieve materials from and receive assistance at the HelpDesk. It is the main staff work area where most of the Language Laboratory's materials are housed.

The Computer Lab

The Computer Lab features twelve Intel and two Macintosh computers. A variety of software is available in most languages taught at the University. Recent additions to the Lab's software collection include extensive CD-ROM programs that implement full multimedia.

The Private Viewing Booths

These small rooms are used for viewing video cassettes. They can each comfortably seat 2 people, perhaps 3. Live SCOLA programming is also available in each of these rooms.

The Private Listening Booths

The Language Laboratory also has private listening booths available for specialized work for graduate students and instructors. They each contain language laboratory cassette recorders which function similar to those in the main Practice Theatre.

The Qualia Room

The Qualia Room is a special theatre-style room which contains a full stage, large projection television, and VCR/audio amplification equipment. The Qualia Room is used for movie presentations, recitals, plays, and other important functions. The room is named after the first language department head of the University, Dr. Charles Qualia, who is considered to have been the pioneer in establishing the language program at Texas Tech.

The SCOLA Control Center

From this control room, SCOLA satellite transmissions are monitored, routed and recorded.
