Message from the Chair

Erin Collopy
Dr. Erin Collopy
Department Chair

CMLL had another incredible semester. The accolades are too many to list here (please go to Academic Achievements for all) but I would like to recognize a few of our faculty and students, starting with Dr Idoia Elola who received multiple significant recognitions this spring for her teaching, including the TTU President's Excellence in Teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Elola was also named as one of the inaugural President's Excellence in Teaching Professors, which is recognition of her national and international standing in teaching related research. Dr. Antonio Ladeira was selected for a Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award to conduct research at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. Dr. Victoria Surliuga received first place for the President's Faculty Book Award for her book Ezio Gribaudo: The Man in the Middle of Modernism. Cait Mongrain, who has worked in CMLL as an instructor for several years after receiving an MA in Classics with us, was recruited by leading universities, including Columbia, Princeton, Penn, and Harvard, for their Classics PhD program. Ms. Mongrain chose Princeton. We will miss her. She has been an excellent instructor and colleague. I would like to recognize our new PhDs: Dr. Josh de la Prada Rosa, Dr. Michael Martinez, Dr. Ricardo Schmidt, and Dr. Rubén Varona. And congratulations to Dr. de la Prada Rosa, Dr. Martinez, and Dr. Rolando Diaz for receiving tenure-track positions and to Dr. Varona for receiving a visiting assistant professorship! They will be excellent representatives of the TTU Spanish doctoral program. Finally, congratulations to all our new MAs and BAs. We are proud of you!

I will be stepping down as chair in August so this will be my final message for the CMLL newsletter. It has been a wonderful and very busy five years since I was first named as interim chair in 2014. I am looking forward to returning to spending more time in the classroom and on research but I will miss the close connections I have had with our faculty, graduate students, and staff. It has been an honor to work with such a talented, hard-working, and committed group of people.
