Department Chair
Associate Professor, Russian

Summer for CMLL means Study Abroad. Our classical archeologists Drs. Hannah Friedman and Christopher Witmore took students to Faynan, Jordan and Binchester, England respectively, giving their students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience at working archeological digs. Dr. Carole Edwards led a program to Reims, France; Dr. Anita McChesney and her students went to Munich, Germany; and Dr. Diego Pascual and graduate students Janie Covarrubias and Michael Martinez taught courses at the TTU Center in Seville, Spain. Next year, our Mexico Field Course will return, led by Drs. Steve Corbett and Jorge Zamora.

There is nothing like an immersion experience to increase language proficiency and to help a student fall in love with a language and culture. Study Abroad is a central mission of CMLL and we want all of our students to have the opportunity to participate in a language program abroad. This is why I ask you to support the Lorum Stratton Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment by attending our inaugural CMLL Alumni Connect, the Tailgate in the Courtyard, during TTU homecoming on October 18. You'll have the opportunity to meet up with old friends and visit with your former professors. We would love to see you and learn about what you are doing now.

Congratulations to our summer graduates and to our new PhD students Dr. Maria Arciniega and Dr. Sabrina Laroussi. We wish them well. And welcome to our new faculty Dr. Belinda Kleinhans (German) and Dr. Starra Priestaf (French); our new visiting faculty Dr. Neil Anderson (Spanish) and Dr. Peter Miller (Classics); and to all our new students. We're looking forward to a busy and fulfilling semester.

I hope to see all of you October 18th at the Tailgate in the Courtyard!
