Individual Faculty Research Profile—Victoria Surliuga, Ph.D.

Literature and Culture Research Interests

My research interests are Italian Studies, Italian Cinema, Modern and Contemporary Italian Poetry, Comparative Literature, Translation, and Creative Writing. I was trained as an Italianist with a primary specialization in Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature, especially post-World War II Italian poetry and the Modernist tradition. As a scholar of Italian Literature, my focus has been the relationship between literature and the visual arts. I have studied the Renaissance and Baroque, and issues related to the Classicist principle of ut pictura poesis (poetry as painting) and the mutual influences between Politian and Botticelli, G. B. Marino and the painters of his age. In the last few years, I have expanded my research to Italian cinema and its intersections with poetry, as seen for example Fellini's use of Zanzotto's poetry. I am interested in specific authorial voices, such as Rossellini, Antonioni, Fellini, Olmi, Bellocchio, Wertmüller, Cavani, and Comencini; the mutual influences between film-makers and actresses, including Anna Magnani, Giulietta Masina, and Monica Vitti; and the role of stardom. My interest in poetry includes translations from French into Italian, and I am currently working on a trilogy of translations.
