Alumni News

The Department will host a reception at Homecoming on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Come have a drink and heavy hors d'oeuvres, meet the student leaders, talk to the faculty, take a department tour, and of course, catch up with old and new friends alike. We are also planning ChE Alumni dinners in Midland/Odessa on November 8, and in Houston on November 13. Be sure to save the dates!

alumn1Assisting with the Texas Tech Top Scholars and Tech Road Shows, held in major cities in Texas, is an effective way for alumni to give back and to help recruit top students to Chemical Engineering and Texas Tech. Dr. Mark Darby (BSChE 1980), a member and past-chair of the External Advisory Board, has been working with Jamie Perez of the Whitacre Collee of Engineering (WCOE) to help recruit students. He helped with last year's Road Show in Houston at the Westin Galleria. Students who indicated interest in Chemical Engineering were sent his way. Many of the questions were along the lines of: What was special about Tech ChE? What do Chemical Engineers do? Mark had as many discussion with parents as with the students, with parents wanting to know about Lubbock and ChE job prospects. The students and parents were impressed by Mark and his enthusiasm for Texas Tech, and conversely, Mark was impressed by the caliber of students and the good discussions. He would be happy to share his experience and encourages ChE alumni to participate in recruiting events near them; reach him at darbymark@sbcglobal.net.

This fall, alumni can help recruit at four Texas Tech Top Scholars events. These are invite only events with students selected by Texas Tech Undergraduate Admissions based on SAT/ACT scores and class rankings. Jamie Perez indicates that it is best for alumni to arrive at the venue around 1:00 pm to get comfortable with the space and to ask questions. All events begin at 1:30 pm with the Meet and Greet from 1:30 - 2:30 pm, and that is when alumni can have the biggest impact. Fall event venues are scheduled in September and October in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston, and Jamie is happy to answer questions and encourages alumni participation. He was particularly interested in helping students with financial need and provided multiple Sanderson Scholarships per year over the last decade. After graduating cum laude, Bill worked for Shell Oil for 21 years, including five years in the North Sea. In 1981, he joined Western Gas Resources and later became President and COO of that organization. He was named a Texas Tech Distinguished Engineer in 1998.
