Scholarships

There are many opportunities for scholarships, and we encourage all students to apply early. In some cases, students may be able to receive multiple scholarships that can be applied to offset tuition and living expenses. If you choose to go on an affiliate program, remember to check to see if your provider offers scholarships specific to your program.

  • WCOE International Engineering Programs Scholarship:This scholarship is only for current WCOE students under financial hardship or with special circumstances that are going abroad.
    Financial need definition:
    a student that receives federal aid such as: PELL Grant, Federal Loans, or any need-based assistance from the State.
    Special circumstances definition: death of a family member, loss of job, natural disasters, etc.
    Preference will be given to students who have applied for other abroad scholarships.
  • Study Abroad Competitive Scholarship (SACS) The Study Abroad Competitive Scholarship is funded by the $4 International Education Fee that all Texas Tech students pay every semester. The scholarship is competitive with approximately 70% of students who complete the application being awarded. TTU domestic and international degree-seeking students who will study abroad on Texas Tech approved programs, or international students seeking a degree at Texas Tech are eligible to apply. Students may apply and be awarded in more than one term. A committee of faculty and students makes the determination of who will receive a scholarship. Study Abroad staff have no input in the award decision. Requires 12-hour enrollment in semester, 6-hour enrollment in summer.
  • TTU Honors College Study Abroad Scholarship: Students, who are in good standing with the Honors College, are eligible to apply after completion of their first two semesters of academic work at TTU, with at least one semester with Honors. Students who plan to study abroad in their last semester must have completed all Honors requirements to be eligible to receive the Honors College Study Abroad scholarship. The Honors College Scholarship Committee takes into consideration numerous factors when deciding student awards, including external funding and outside scholarships. Students who plan to study abroad for a second time, and are not eligible to use additional external funding, will be considered for scholarships for Honors study abroad programs on a case by case basis.

  • Gilman Scholarship: (for PELL Grant Recipients ONLY): Amount up to $5,000 for semester, up to $3,000 for summer. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Those studying a foreign language may also apply for a Critical Language Scholarship (additional $4,000). Please see the Gilman Tips and Guidelines PDF

  • Critical Language Scholarship: An intensive language summer program abroad. The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds and career paths, with the goal of building a cadre of Americans who speak critical languages at high levels, in government, business, arts and culture, science and engineering, health and medicine, education, research and other fields.
  • Boren Language Scholarship: up to $10,000 a semester; (Also $8,000 summer program specifically for STEM students) Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
  • Raiders Rojos: Raiders Rojos provides retention scholarships for Texas Tech University System students that have completed at least one full semester of study at Texas Tech and have met the minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 3.0.
  • Terry Scholars: Students who receive the Terry Scholarship should contact the Texas Tech Terry Scholar Program Coordinator to learn about funding for studying abroad.
  • Women's Studies Scholarship The Women's Studies Program offers a scholarship for either one undergraduate or one graduate scholarship.
  • Student Disability Services Scholarships Scholarships are awarded late spring and early summer for use during the following school year. Use of these scholarships toward costs of studying abroad depends on the scholarship the type of award. Only SDS registered students are eligible.
  • Military & Veterans Programs Office Scholarships Texas Tech University awards scholarships to veterans and dependents each year based upon available funding, and these scholarships can help offset the costs of studying abroad. Information regarding each scholarship, requirements, application, and application process as well as selection process is outlined on the Military & Veterans Programs website.
  • Clinton Colgin Scholarship This scholarship is available for FALL students who study at The Texas Tech University Center in Sevilla, Spain. It is awarded through the fall study abroad application process. Only students participating in the TTU Center in Sevilla are eligible to apply.

STUDY IN THE U.K.

  • British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) BUTEX offers eight scholarships for students currently registered at an institution in the U.S. or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX. The value of each scholarship is £500 (approximately $1000) and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
  • ESTA Scholarship Fund ESTA will support 2 students each year, either entering a college or university, granting each $500 to be used towards educational expenses.

STUDY IN ASIA

  • Foundation for Asia Pacific Education: The Foundation provides scholarships for students studying abroad in the Asia Pacific region of the world, including Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. In each academic year, the Foundation awards more than $200,000 in scholarships and grants to help 75 students who may otherwise be unable to study abroad and ensure that students have an affordable international experience in the Asia Pacific region. The foundation may award funds to students who are from specific academic majors, who demonstrate diverse backgrounds or participation, and/or who are from specific universities or colleges. The Foundation may also have a general pool of scholarship funds available to qualified students. Details of applying for this Foundation's scholarships will be available to participants upon acceptance.
  • Freeman-Asia: Studying in Asia before graduating can give students a competitive advantage in their professional careers, especially when collaborating with international peers. More than half of Freeman-ASIA alumni report being employed in a position related to Asian affairs or requiring knowledge of an Asian language. As more employers seek new hires with meaningful and substantive experience in Asia, it is critical that more Americans learn about and engage with Asian economies, political systems and cultures.
  • Schwarzman Scholars Every year, up to 200 students from around the world are selected to be Schwarzman Scholars. This scholarship program is designed to develop leadership skills and professional networks though a one-year Master's degree in Global Affairs on the campus of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Candidates are selected on the basis of leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, ability to anticipate and act on emerging trends and opportunities, exemplary character, and desire to understand other cultures, perspectives and positions. Those selected will receive a comprehensive scholarship that include tuition fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing, an in-country study tour, course books and supplies, Lenovo laptop and smartphone, health insurance, and a personal $3,500 stipend.

    Students pursuing an undergraduate degree as well as those who have completed an undergraduate degree are encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate strong English skills.

STUDY IN GERMANY

  • DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service DAAD offers a wide range of opportunities to students, scholars, and universities of the United States and Canada, from undergraduate students to post-doctoral scholars, for study and research in Germany. Scholarships may be granted for a minimum of 4 (one semester) and a maximum of 10 months (one academic year). Recipients will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros (approximately $800), plus additional funds to help defray travel and research expenses as well as health insurance.

Miscellaneous Scholarships

  • Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to all TTU undergraduates with a 3.75+ GPA. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year.
  • Golden Key Golden Key International Honour Society is an internationally recognized, nonprofit organization with over 350 chapters throughout the United States and across the globe. Golden Key invites only the top 15% of juniors and seniors and high-achieving graduate school students to be members. This scholarship assists Golden Key members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. The study abroad program cannot have been completed prior to the application deadline date. Award recipients will be expected to contribute an article about their study abroad experience to CONCEPTS, Golden Key's annual magazine. Ten $1,000 awards will be presented each year (three for the October deadline, seven for the April deadline).
  • The National Italian American Foundation ScholarshipsThe National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements; students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Scholarship awards range from $2,500-$10,000.
  • Diversity Abroad Scholarships
  • Fund for Education Abroad: FEA scholarships were designed by professionals in the field of Education Abroad to meet the growing need for financial resources to enable more students to go abroad. Scholarships will be up to $5,000 per semester and are not limited to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study. FEA will award funds for students planning to study abroad on academically rigorous programs with a preference for underrepresented students.
  • Go Overseas Scholarship: This scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in or in the process of applying to study abroad. The largest scholarship is $1,000.
  • GoAbroad.com Applications are due by May. Winners will be announced by June. For internships too.
  • Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) Study Abroad
    Excellent Resource: Lists all scholarships run by CIEE, as well as non-CIEE funding
  • CIEE Global Access Initiative (GAIN) Scholarship: Amount $1,000-$5,000
    The GAIN Scholarship was developed to aide in diversifying study abroad by providing opportunities for students who are economically challenged, from diverse backgrounds, students with documented disabilities, or underrepresented fields of study. Eligibility: Available to CIEE Study Center applicants only.
  • CIEE Language Intensive Focus Track (LIFT) Scholarship
    Must apply in year PRIOR to when you want to study abroad. Ex: Apply by April 15, 2015 for study in Summer/Fall of 2016
  • Foundation for Global Scholars: (2.5GPA or higher)

Financial Aid

Students eligible for financial aid may receive funding to pay for approved programs.

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. By listing Texas Tech's Federal School Code (003644) on the application, students are applying for all federal and state aid programs.
  • Students wishing to discuss financial aid options with a Study Abroad Financial Aid Advisor should go to the Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in West Hall 301.
  • If the financial aid awarded does not cover the program cost, students may want to apply for an Alternative or Parent PLUS Loan.
  • Students should check with the Financial Aid Study Abroad Advisor before leaving for their program to verify that loan(s) will be received via EFT.
  • The financial aid award may be disbursed five days prior to the beginning of the study abroad program. All tuition and fees must be paid before students can receive a refund.
  • For summer programs, a separate application for financial aid should be submitted online at the Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships website.
  • The financial aid application process should be completed at least eight weeks before departure in order to receive funds in a timely manner.

Students must be enrolled through Texas Tech University for 12 hours or more to be eligible to receive financial aid for any semester, or six hours for the summer.

Funding Workshops

The TTU Study Abroad Office is holding three funding workshops throughout the semester to help you get information about how financial aid applies, available scholarships, and how you can save for your international experience. These sessions are not specific to engineering students. These sessions can apply to any Texas Tech student going abroad.

Gilman Workshops

The TTU Study Abroad Office, the TTU Financial Aid Office, and the Office of National and International Scholarships and Fellowships (NISF) are facilitating workshops to help students prepare for the Gilman Scholarship application process. Students who are current Federal Pell Grant recipients are eligible to apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students planning to study abroad in the semesters and up to $3,000 in the summer sessions. Those studying a critical need language while abroad may qualify for additional funding. These sessions are not specific to engineering students.

Gilman Tips and Guidelines

TTU Writing Center

The Texas Tech Writing Center offers in-person and online critiques for essays (including scholarship essays!). We encourage all of our engineering students to apply for as many scholarships as possible. The Writing Center is a great resource to use for tips, revisions, and more.
