College Improves in U.S. News' Best Undergraduate Engineering Program Rankings

In its 2015 ranking of Best Undergraduate Engineering programs released in September 2014, U.S. News and World Report ranked the Whitacre College of Engineering the 82nd best program in the nation, tied with eight other schools.

"Annually, one of the sources families of prospective high school students look to is the U.S. News & World Report rankings as a reference when deciding on which university to attend," said Dr. M. Duane Nellis, Texas Tech president. "We are proud of our efforts at Texas Tech to continue striving upward and making our wonderful university a higher education choice for more and more outstanding students each year.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the college's online programs second in the "Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs for Veterans" rankings. These programs also ranked 20th in the overall Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs.

New SafeRaiders Safety Incentive Program: Nominate a SafeRaider

Maintaining a safe learning and research environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors in our laboratories, classrooms, and buildings is a top priority for the college.

The Whitacre College of Engineering's new SafeRaiders program allows faculty, staff, and students to recognize individuals who are practicing safe research and laboratory habits. Nominations are accepted at any time and should emphasize one or more of the following:

  • How the "SafeRaider" is doing his or her part to safely advance the college and its research mission.
  • How the "SafeRaider" is maintaining a safe working environment for themselves and others.
  • How the "SafeRaider" is promoting safe practices and procedures in the laboratory and classroom.

SafeRaiders will be periodically recognized by the dean and are a key component of building a Community of Scholars.

Monaco Named ARCS Scholar, Receives NASA Fellowship

The Lubbock Chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) has selected Paula Monaco, a second year civil engineering doctoral student, as an ARCS Scholar for the 2014-2015 year. She will be honored at an event on October 28 and will receive a $5,000 stipend. ARCS funds several awards to scholars pursuing scientific research careers. These awards are merit-based, and she will present a poster on her current research activities.

The Lubbock chapter was founded in 1972. The ARCS Foundation is dedicated to helping meet the country's need for scientists and engineers by providing scholarships to academically outstanding students who are United States citizens in need of financial assistance to complete their higher education, thereby contributing not only to the advancement of science, but also to the material and intellectual welfare of all people.

Monaco is also the recipient of a NASA Texas Space Grant Consortium Fellowship for the 2014-2015 school year. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis with consideration of excellence in academics, interest in space, and recommendations from the applicant's institution.
