Texas Tech Makes Its Mark on NASA

As the space shuttle Atlantis completes its final voyage, Texas Tech commemorates a relationship with NASA that spans nearly a half-century.

In addition to NASA research that is conducted at Texas Tech, several individuals that have walked the halls of the Whitacre College of Engineering, both past and present, have played a significant role in NASA's history as astronauts. They include:

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp
Science Camp

Area middle school students are curing the summer “brain drain” this year with a heavy dose of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fun at the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp hosted by Texas Tech. The hands-on program offers students an exciting way to beat the heat as they design space suits, build rockets and more, while experiencing life on a college campus.

This is the second year Texas Tech has had the honor of participating in the program. The camp runs July 21-29.

Watson Named ABET President-Elect

Watson

ABET, the higher education accreditation authority for applied science, computing, engineering, and technology programs, has elected Dr. Karan Watson as its 2011-2012 President-Elect. Watson will be installed during the fall 2011 ABET Board of Directors Meeting in October.

Watson was recently appointed Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University. She received bachelor of science, master of science, and doctor of philosophy degrees in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University.

She is a Fellow of both ASEE and IEEE and has been awarded the IEEE field medal for undergraduate teaching (1996). In 1997 she received the ASEE Minorities in Engineering Award. She served on the ASEE Women in Engineering Board in 1992 and 1997. She has served as the President of the IEEE Education Society and the chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee.

Chemical Engineering

  • Dr. Siva A. Vanapalli was awarded $101,048 by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The title of the proposal was "CPRIT-HR: Integrated Microfluidic Technology for High Throughput Screening of the Metastatic Potential of Tumor Cells."
  • Dr. Uzi Mann was awarded $106,534 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Closed-loop Reservoir Management Using a Reduced-order Model-based Control & Uncertainty Propagation Framework."
  • Dr. Karlene A. Hoo was awarded $179,857 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Program Director for the Partnerships for Innovative and the Accelerating Innovation Research Programs."
  • Dr. Siva A. Vanapalli was awarded $5,751 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "REU SUPPLEMENT: Microfluidics to Probe Partial Coalescence in Emulsions Containing Interfacial Crystals."

Civil and Environmental Engineering

  • Dr. Sang Wook Bae was awarded $30,000 by the CRSI Education and Research Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Evaluation of the Tensile Mechanical Properties of Coiled Reinforcing Bars."
  • Dr. Clifford B. Fedler was awarded $12,000 by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The title of the proposal was "SUPPLEMENT: Wichita Falls Monitoring (FY11)."

Computer Science

  • Dr. Yu Zhuang was awarded $200,000 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "PIRE-Simulation of Electronic Non-Adaibatic Dynamics for Reactions with Organic Macromolecules, Liquids, and Surfaces."

Construction Engineering and Engineering Technology

  • Dr. Daan Liang was awarded $50,314.20 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Development of a Quantitative Model for Measuring Regional Economic Resilience to Hurricanes."

Center for Multidisciplinary Research in Transportation

  • Dr. Moon-Cheol Won was awarded $5,000 by the Texas Department of Transportation. The title of the proposal was "Technical Support for Rigid Pavement and Concrete Materials Branch 46-IMTIA018."

Electrical and Computer Engineering

  • Drs. Sunanda Mitra and Brian S. Nutter were awarded $55,000 by the Office of Naval Research/SWRI. The title of the proposal was "IED Access Portable 3-D Imaging."
  • Dr. Mary C. Baker was awarded $4,302.76 by the Greater Texas Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Middle School Math and Science (MS)2: Understanding by Design."
  • Drs. Stephen B. Bayne, Ronald H. Cox, Timothy J. Dallas, Richard O. Gale, Tanja N. Karp, Changzhi Li, Yu-Chun D. Lie, and Brian S. Nutter were awarded $152,418 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Scholarships in Semiconductor Device Engineering."

Industrial Engineering

  • Dr. Ismael R. De Farias was awarded $39,832 by the Office of Naval Research. The title of the proposal was "Cardinality Bounded Mathematical Programs: New Techniques, Models and Computation."

Mechanical Engineering

  • Dr. Qing Hui was awarded $130,683.90 by the DOD/Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The title of the proposal was "Balanced Coordination Algorithms for Damage Mitigation and Resource Allocation in Network Systems."
  • Dr. Sukalyan Bhattacharya was awarded $99,889 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Radial Migration of Suspended Particles and its Effect on Multispecies Flow Inside a Conduit."

Nano Tech Center

  • Dr. Sergey A. Nikishin was awarded $19,900 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "SUPPLEMENT: ANN/NIRT: Nano-engineering Efficient Optoelectronic Devices: A Higher-power, Electron-beam Pumped, UV-C Laser Prototype."

Petroleum Engineering

  • Dr. Shameem Siddiqui was awarded $10,000 by Indiana University. The title of the proposal was "Two-Phase Relative Permeability Studies for Indiana University."

Dr. Donald Y.C. Lie, Keh-Shew Lu Regents Chair, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, recently presented an keynote speech titled "Design of Highly-Efficient Si-Based Transmitter ICs for Mobile Broadband Wireless Communications and Sensors Applications" at the 9th IEEE International NEWCAS Conference held in Bordeaux, France, on June 26 - 29, 2011.

Lie's professional research interests are:

  1. Ultralow-power and power-efficient RF/Analog integrated circuit design and System-on-a-Chip design and test; and
  2. Interdisciplinary research on medical electronics, bioengineering, biosensors and biosignal processing.
