Current Activities and Interests
Currently, Joe is a 4th year graduate student in the clinical
psychology program at TTU. His primary research focus is on exploring
mechanisms that may explain why certain individuals chronically engage in
unhealthy behaviors, such as cigarette smoking and heavy episodic drinking. In
particular, Joe has looked at the role of impulsivity on the maintenance of
these behaviors. Results from his master’s project suggested that over a 48-hour
smoking abstinence period, smokers with heightened levels of impulsivity
experienced greater levels of craving and anxiety than their less impulsive
peers. This project was recently accepted for publication in Nicotine and
Tobacco Research. Joe’s dissertation will examine the hypothesis that
impulsivity is related to smoking cessation relapse potential in those who
engage in both binge drinking and smoking behaviors.
