The College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech University is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will be responsible to assist with covering the following essential duties:

  • Consult and advise the Department Chair of Communication Studies(COMS) and COMS faculty on issues affecting our students, including course availability and scheduling
  • Advise all Communication Studies majors; counsels students regarding educational issues such as course selection, class scheduling and registration
  • Maintains effective customer service, teamwork and attitude
  • Answers student/faculty/staff emails and phone calls in a timely and courteous fashion
  • Participates in Red Raider Orientations and Commencement Ceremonies
  • Maintains and updates required forms in student advising, orientations and registration
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records for all Communication Studies majors
  • Stays current with TTU and national advising organizations
  • Participates in recruiting events as needed
  • Attends departmental meetings and maintains relationship with the Department Chair of COMS
  • Post all Communication Studies degrees
  • Enter information into Banner for Academic Transfers into CoMC, Changes of Degree Objectives, Identification of Major (and Minor when appropriate)
  • Takes care of specific secure information for the Director of Communication Studies
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
  • Respectful, cooperative, and effective in getting along with a diverse group of employees, students, and clients
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to be a great team player to anticipate and respond to the needs of the Advising Office
  • For TTU Internal Candidates: Working knowledge of Cognos and Banner Reports and the use of Xtender
