Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Test

GSP review sessions

The Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation Test is required of all Media & Communication majors. Unless the GSP is successfully completed early in a student's career, graduation in four years is almost impossible. A passing score of 70 on the GSP is a prerequisite for News Writing and for Advertising Writing, and for students who wish to graduate after transferring News Writing credit from another institution.

GSP available at Academic Testing Services

The College of Media & Communication now offers the Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation test through the Academic Testing Services facilities, Room 214 of West Hall.

The exam will be available via computer in quality-controlled testing labs in West Hall on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday – with the exception of campus closings and final exams. The test will be offered at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Opportunities to test will be offered several times per day within regular business hours and examinees will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. Students have a 90-minute limit for the computerized test.

Test-takers will not be allowed to retest until after five business days and will be required to sign a statement that they have not tested at Texas Tech University or any other location within the past five business days.

Special accommodations are available for those with letters specifying such need.

The fee for each test or retest is $30 and will be collected from the examinee at the time of testing; test fees are non-refundable. Fees are payable to Texas Tech University by check, money order or major credit card. Cash IS NOT accepted.

Examinees requesting an emergency test time outside the established schedule may be scheduled at the discretion of Academic Testing Services personnel and may be charged an emergency fee.

Helpful Grammar book

The helpful book, "Painless Grammar" by Rebecca Elliott, can help you improve both grammar and punctuation skills, describing the basics of each with examples.
