2012 Outstanding Alumni

The College of Media & Communication Outstanding Alumni Awards were instituted in 1981 to recognize alumni of Texas Tech University who have made outstanding contributions to the field of media and communication.

Any person, organization, media group or company may make nominations for the annual recognition. A selection committee representing the students, faculty, alumni and advisory committee is appointed by the dean of the College of Media & Communication.

Outstanding Alumni are recognized at a breakfast on Saturday morning prior to a home football game in the fall.

A medallion is given to each honoree, and plaques are retained for display in the Media & Communication Building.


Marilyn L. Peppers-Citizen

Marilyn L. Peppers-Citizen

Marilyn L. Peppers-Citizen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from Texas Tech University.

Her further education includes earning a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.; a Master of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J.; an Organizational Transformation Certificate and an Information Strategies Certificate, both from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

Gregg T. Holmes

Gregg T. Holmes

Gregg T. Holmes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 from Texas Tech University.

As senior operating officer, Holmes has had profit and loss responsibility at three major communication companies. He has a strong record for improving profitability and customer service by increasing market share; improving the sales/marketing process; raising employee productivity, satisfaction and commitment; and operating in highly competitive market segments. He founded a consulting firm serving a variety of start-up/early stage companies.

Joe Hornaday

Joe Hornaday

Joe Hornaday publicized, promoted and marketed Texas Tech University Athletics for 30 years from 1978-2008.

He was responsible for the promotion of Texas Tech’s athletic image through press releases, media guides, game programs and daily service to the media as assistant sports information director from 1978-1980 and sports information director from 1980-1996. Hornaday was responsible for the creation and content of football television and radio coaches’ shows, highlight videos, posters and schedules cards; securing basketball radio station affiliates; staging weekly in-season press conferences; finalizing coach/player media interviews; overseeing football/basketball pre-game and halftime activities, and entertaining media covering home-game events.

Emily Jones McCoy

Emily Jones McCoy

Emily Jones McCoy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism in 1998 from Texas Tech University. She minored in Spanish and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

She has been involved in sports reporting since she was named sports director in 1998 at KCBD-TV in Lubbock. At the time, she believed she was just the second female sports director at a major network affiliate in the country. She also worked as a news reporter and anchor until she left the station in 2004. Moving to FOX Sports Southwest in 2004, she was a sideline reporter for FOX Sports’ nationally televised college football package. Also, she served as reporter and anchor for FOX Sports Southwest’s pre- and post-game shows for the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Stars. Still with FOX, she is the in-game reporter for the Texas Rangers’ home telecasts, and she hosts the Big 12 Showcase.

Randall King Nelson

Randall King Nelson

Randall King Nelson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 from Texas Tech University. In 1989, he completed his Master’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami.

He has a wide variety of senior leadership experience, including more than 30 years with Baxter International, American Hospital Supply Corporation, VenPro Corporation, Kerberos Proximal Solutions and Uptake Medical. He has a successful record of innovative leadership in distinctly different business segments, including clinical diagnostics, medical devices, hospital and clinical lab supply distribution, and the cardiovascular service industry. He understands the global markets, as well as the numerous segments of the U.S. healthcare industry. His experiences ranges from being president and CEO of an early-stage venture capital-funded medical device company, to division president of three multi-million-dollar business units of Baxter International.

Brandon Snow

Brandon Snow

Brandon Snow is the vice president of Global Marketing Partnerships with the National Basketball Association. He has almost 20 years of experience across the advertising, marketing and sports industries with a unique background that stretches across marketing and communication strategy, agency business development, and sports property sponsorship sales.

He has held senior-level marketing and management positions with global advertising agency networks, like DDB Worldwide, while also being able to lead the NBA’s global sponsorship sales efforts around the world.
