The evolution of the College of Media & Communication now entails a newly renovated building on the Texas Tech University campus. The devotion of individuals to the advancement of the college has been essential in its growth from its beginnings in the early years of the university to its current status as a college. On the cover, (clockwise from top-left) Chancellor Kent Hance raised the funds for the expansion of the college into its new home. Former administrator Billy I. Ross built the mass communications program in its early and foundational years and was largely responsible for the building of the original Mass Communications Building. C.R. “Choc” Hutcheson is a longtime supporter of the college whose donations for scholarships bring quality education to students. Wendell Mayes Jr., former Texas Tech University Board of Regents chairperson, dedicated the original building and has been a major figure in shaping both the college and the university, especially through his support for student scholarships. The formal dedication of the new College of Media & Communication Building was a celebration of major advancements that have led to a new presence at Texas Tech University.

Maxine Fry McCullough: In Memorium
Maxine Fry McCullough, formerly of Midland, Texas, passed away on March 21, 2012, in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 94. She was born July 5, 1917, in Lockney, Texas; the daughter of Robert Ernest and Ruby Britton Fry, early settlers of Floyd County. She graduated from Floydada High School, and in 1938 received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Texas Tech University.
Morris Lectureship: Editor-in-chief speaks of forbidden topic
Steven Alan Honley is the editor-in-chief of the Foreign Service Journal. “As we mark the ninth anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I believe it is vital to reflect on our experience there,” Honley said. He questioned the silent audience, “What led us to want to go to war?” and “What lessons can we take away from our time in Iraq?” Though Honley made it clear his question was not about the execution of the United States’ strategy. He said he understands why many Americans support the war.
The Change of a Life Time: A Trip to Remember
Chatter came to a halt. Silence filled the area. The structure overtook every inch of ground. No photo does it justice. The worn metal tinted grey, the lights mask any imperfection.
I began this trip confused, about to graduate, worried about my future, with no where to turn. No expectations were made, and no thought crossed my mind that this trip would shape my years to come.
We were not here to study in a classroom; we were here to study the world. To some it was another trip out of the country; to me it was a chance to fulfill my parents’ dream.
A Hot Job at College Hot Spots
The clock is ticking. The time is only hours before the deadline for the entire issue of the magazine to be printed. At any given second, you feel like you are about to pull your hair out because you are still waiting on one last interview to write your story that still has to be edited and rushed for printing.
Aventura Española
For a group of about 20 Mass Communications students the end of their 2011spring semester signaled the beginning of a life changing adventure. Anticipation and excitement built up leading up to the trip to Seville, Spain. Not only did students get to travel to a foreign country in Europe, but they also received lessons from Mass Communication College’s professors: Kent Wilkinson and Jerod Foster. Both are highly esteemed professors in the college. The courses that they taught were Special Topics in Spanish Media and Cultural Photography. These courses were useful, cultural, as well as fun.
2011 Mass Communications Career Fair Exceeds Expectations
The October 2011 Mass Communications Career Fair had a stronger showing than the previous year, allowing students to expand their career opportunities.
The Mass Communications Career Fair, held annually at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, attracts businesses from around the state of Texas looking for young employees. Lauren Rozelle, an assistant to Career Fair coordinator Aleesa Ross, said this year’s turnout was better than expected.
Wilkinson in Paris
The editorial staff at the Mass Communicator kindly granted me this opportunity to share some thoughts, observations and photos from my month-long stint as a visiting professor at the French Institute of the Press in Paris in November, 2011. I was invited to give six two-hour lectures to master’s classes. Twice a week I used distance-learning technology to connect back to my international communication graduate seminar at Lubbock and Arlington, where one student was also linked. My free time was dedicated to nourishing my senses and soul with art viewing, efforts to understand and speak a melodious language, French cuisine, city wandering and visiting friends. Thomas Jefferson’s words still pertain 226 years later: "A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.”
