The College of Media & Communication offers hands-on learning in multiple media settings. Explore ways to get involved in student organizations and find other opportunties for student work.

Use day-one opportunities like these to gain real-world experience in a number of industry areas including social media, visual arts, creative strategy, sports media, content creation and many others. Join other students creating award-winning stories, serving on nationally-recognized teams and organizations and showcase your expertise to local, national and global audiences.

Student Groups, Hands-on Opportunities, Organizations, and Publications

Ad Team

  • Adviser: Shannon Bichard
  • About: The Advertising Team at Texas Tech is a group of students selected by interview to compete in a national student advertising competition. The annual competition is put on by the American Advertising Federation and features a corporate client. Past clients have included Glidden paints, Coca Cola, JCPenney, Yahoo, and State Farm. The client provides a case study outlining the history of its product and current advertising situation. The case study reflects a real world situation to challenge students' critical thinking abilities and creativity. Students must research the product and its competition, identify potential problems and develop an integrated communications campaign for the client. Each student team then pitches its campaign to a panel of judges in April.

Association for Women in Communications (AWC) Student Chapter

  • Adviser:Lindsay Grannan
  • About: The Association for Women in Communications Student Chapter is an organization for all students in the College of Media and Communications at Texas Tech University. Members have the opportunity to work with a professional chapter of AWC, hear group speakers, and participate in fundraising and community service.

Communication Studies Society

  • About: Communication Studies Society's (CSS) mission is to give members a clear understanding of the communication field by providing networking opportunities with peers and professionals in the communication field.

Daily Toreador

  • Director: Sheri Lewis
  • About: Students can work in various paid roles at The Daily Toreador (formerly The University Daily). Its website, dailytoreador.com, and social media operate under the College of Media & Communication. The newspaper, website and social media operate independently as an independent collegiate media free from faculty, staff or administrative control. The Daily Toreador online and print editions and social media serve the campus community with guidance from a professional media adviser. The newspaper also serves as a designated public forum for members of the campus community to voice their opinions free from administrative control or censorship. Diversity in Media Organization (DIMO)

  • About: The Diversity in Media  organization (DIMO) aims to open the discussion of diversity, equity, & inclusion in the world of Media amongst students of the College of Media & Communication and other colleges at Texas Tech through events, discussions, and community service. This group intends to introduce inclusive concepts, break stereotypes, and creat more progressive, and accepting media professionals to cultivate strong diverse leaders of the various media industries. DIMO also discusses the need for diversity in the workplace and works to empower students to continue promoting and working towards diversity once they graduate

Kappa Tau Alpha

  • About: Kappa Tau Alpha is a college honor society that recognizes academic excellence and promotes scholarship in journalism and mass communication. Students are automatically selected and inducted into the organization based on academic performance.

KTXT-FM 88.1 The Raider

  • About: KTXT is Lubbock's only Alternative music station and is made up of News, Sports, Production, Digital Content, Operations, and Underwriting departments. Students can work in paid and volunteer positions, or register for a practicum course for the semester.   • About: Texas Tech University is home to one of the most successful debate programs in the country. TTU Forensics is one of the oldest programs on campus, and has established a legacy of excellence that mirrors the lofty goals and expectations the University has set for itself. The debate program has produced three national championships in the past decade: Two NPDA National Championships (2008 and 2010) and an NPTE top-speaker (2010). The program has placed numerous teams in top 5 finishes at nationals and is generally regarded as a year-in, year-out powerhouse.

  • About: Pi Delta Alpha is a professional fraternity open to all students in the College of Media & Communication (CoMC). The organization started in 1987 to connect majors across CoMC through social, professional, and service opportunities. Membership meetings are held each month and cover various topics such as building a strong personal brand, developing professional skills, finding the best career path, and networking with alumni and faculty. Members participate in a service project each semester to give back to the college and community. Monthly social events also help members connect and build lasting friendships. Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)

  • About: The Public Relations Student Society of America is a nationally affiliated student public relations society, who recently chartered a chapter at Texas Tech University in the College of Media & Communication. PRSSA provides members with career knowledge, mentorship, peer support, professional networking, portfolio development and resume building opportunities. The association hosts meetings twice a month that feature practitioners, and alumni guest speakers. Topics include corporate communication, agency work, political public relations, nonprofit public relations, social media, sports public relations, career development, internships and job applications. The association also hosts a number of professional networking, social, and community service events throughout the year. The highlight of the year is the annual spring agency tour to major cities. Students participating in the trip attend tours of public relations firms and other organizations with large in-house strategic communication departments. RaiderComm

  • About: RaiderComm is a student-run, full-service public relations firm based in the Department of Public Relations & Strategic Communication Management at the College of Media & Communication. As a 3-hour elective course, the firm provides college majors with an opportunity to develop as professionals, learn new skills, and apply their coursework to real-world accounts for a wide range of clients. Participation in the firm provides students with portfolio-building opportunities and experience in new business development, client relations, and campaign planning and implementation. Students also have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills by serving as firm directors and account managers.  Applications for the course are open fall and spring. The criteria include completion of  PRSC 2310 (Principles of Public Relations) or MCOM 2320 (Writing for Media and Communication) with a grade of C or better,  a 2.75 TTU GPA, and Instructor permission after completing the application process.
  • Meetings: Mondays/Wednesdays (class time varies).

  • About: The Tech Advertising Federation isa chapter of the American Advertising Federation. The organization is designed to provide advertising majors the opportunities they need to be successful in the industry and enhance their learning outside of the classroom. TAF brings in guest speakers from big and small agencies across the U.S. TAF also takes its members on tours of agencies as well as hosts a student advertising competition and other fundraising/philanthropy events. Networking opportunities, critique of portfolio work, and the sharing of internships/jobs/industry knowledge are available.

Tech Creative Media Association (TCMA)

  • About: TCMA allows content creators to gain valuable insight from each other, facilitates collaboration opportunities, and provides a place for other creatives to meet each other. The organization itself has multiple focuses, including, but not limited to, film and television analysis, technique analysis, writing, graphic design, photography, animation, and overall production. The organization promotes the idea of self-production by showcasing the members' abilities and strengths, and encouraging them to create their own original ideas.
