Dr. Graybeal's research uses economic and management theory to explore issues of media sustainability, and the ways in which sustainability is strategized in a changing marketplace. Economics alone are not sufficient to understand the issue of sustainability. Dr. Graybeal believes that true sustainability comes from organizations, and leaders within those organizations, understanding the external changes occurring and responding to those changes. He has published work in the Newspaper Research Journal, International Journal on Media Management, and Journal of Media Business Studies, among others.
Dr. Graybeal co-founded Lede, LLC., a social media and business model innovation consultancy, while earning his doctorate at the University of Georgia. With prior experience as a journalist, reporter, editor and entrepreneur, Dr. Graybeal has designed research and recommended strategy for multinational firms, single media outlets and small start-up companies.

Dr. Graybeal is the bibliographer of the Media Management & Economics division of the Association for Educators in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC).
