Red and Black Counseling Program Receives National Attention
The financial counseling program administered by the College of Human Sciences helps students get an early start on managing their finances.

Budgets? Credit? Debt? For many cash-strapped graduates, already saddled with credit cards and buried under student loans, such terms fall into the four-letter-word category.
Yet in a country where personal spending outstrips savings, a bit of good advice can go a long way toward paring down – or even preventing – the monthly Everest of bills that avalanches through most mailboxes.
Such was the inspiration for Texas Tech’s innovative Red to Black counseling services, which help students tackle their debt before it can take root.
The program, now a model for other universities around the country, offers financial planning assistance to help Red Raiders keep their expenses in line at a time when they are perhaps most vulnerable to the allure of easy credit.
Free financial planning, peer-to-peer counseling and seminars offer sage tips for not only establishing credit, but using it wisely. Participants also learn the value of practices such as socking money away in savings, picking proper employee benefits and making smart car or house buys.
The Red to Black program is administered through Texas Tech’s Personal Financial Planning program in the College of Human Sciences.
Red to Black has received national attention and recently got a plug in an article on msnbc.com. The article, entitled Banks go back to school with credit cards, was written by Gayle B. Ronan and appeared online on Feb. 13.
