Recent Grad Named National Mortar Board Fellowship Recipient
Former chapter president receives $2000 award.

Rachel Frederick graduated in May with a bachelor of science in biology.
Rachel Frederick, a recent graduate of Texas Tech University, was named recipient of a $2,000 Mary Elizabeth Ramier Fellowship award.
Frederick, who graduated in May with a bachelor of science in biology, was initiated into Mortar Board in 2006 and served as chapter president. When asked about her Mortar Board experience, she explained, “Mortar Board brought together leaders from across campus. I made lifelong friendships with people I had not had an opportunity to meet.”
Frederick will attend Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine to obtain her doctorate of medicine.
A total of $38,500 in fellowships was awarded to 13 Mortar Board members this year. Fellowship recipients are chosen based on academic excellence, recommendation, promise, financial need and Mortar Board involvement. Since the establishment of the Mortar Board fellowship program in 1941, more than $500,000 has been awarded to assist members in pursuing further study in graduate or professional school.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 223 chartered collegiate and 25 active alumni chapters, with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The chapter at Texas Tech University was founded in 1957.
Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lance Armstrong and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
