The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a variety of educational and entertainment opportunities to people 50 years of age and older.
Texas Tech University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute has been awarded a $1 million endowment gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
Founded in 1977 by businessman and community leader Bernard Osher, the San Francisco-based foundation seeks to improve the quality of life through support for higher education and the arts.
The Institute provides learning opportunities for people 50 years of age and older who want to continue to expand their knowledge and interests for personal fulfillment. Members participate in classes, discussion groups, special events and social activities.
What used to be the Texas Tech Lifelong Learning Community, became a part of the growing national network of university-based Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes in 2005, when it received a $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation. The Foundation provided two additional grants of $100,000 each to the Institute in 2006 and 2007.
In a recent letter to the Institute, Mary Bitterman, president of the Bernard Osher Foundation, wrote, “The progress that the Institute has made since receiving its initial support from the Foundation in June 2005 has been outstanding, and we congratulate you and your colleagues on your many remarkable achievements.”
