As a certified appraiser and quilt collector, Marcia Kaylakie teaches quilt care, conservation, storage and documentation.
Marcia Kaylakie, author of “Texas Quilts and Quilters: A Lone Star Legacy,” will present a talk and digital slide show based on her book at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. March 15 at the National Ranching Heritage Center. Each program will last about an hour and will include a book signing; books will be available for sale onsite.
Kaylakie, an avid quilt collector, personally viewed thousands of quilts from the Panhandle to Big Bend country, the Piney Woods to the Gulf Coast. The result of her research and travels is “Texas Quilts and Quilters,” published by Texas Tech University Press. The book contains rich photography, highlighting the textures and hues and detailing the complexity of 34 of the best-kept secrets of the South. Hidden away in closets, trunks and attics, the quilts are not only heirlooms but irreplaceable emblems of Texas heritage.
Most of these quilts will never be exhibited or appear in any permanent record. All Texas-made, they span the state geographically and range from the 1870s to the turn of the 21st century. These quilts preserve a unique and compelling aspect of Texas history--examples of what Texas quilting was and is as a craft and as a cultural narrative.
Kaylakie is a quilt collector, teacher, judge and certified appraiser. Her lectures and workshops focus on how American quilts reflect social, political and economic history and feature vintage quilts from her own collection. Kaylakie also teaches quilt care, conservation, storage and documentation.
The presentation is free but seating is limited. For reservations, call Mary Jo Keeling with Peoples Bank at (806) 794-0044 or Robin Gilliam with the National Ranching Heritage Center at (806) 742-0498.
