With the return of football season, Texas Tech fans are gearing up to watch the Red Raiders and their opponents face off at Jones AT&T Stadium. But behind the game-day frenzy, university officials are busy raising funds to give a much-needed facelift to the stadium’s east side.
The expansion initiative kicked off Aug. 7 when the Board of Regents approved the project to expand the east side of the stadium. Online contributions began coming in within minutes of the announcement hitting the news.
About $6 million is needed to completely fund the $25 million project, which has already raised $19 million. Officials expect to have the necessary funds in place by the end of this football season. Construction will begin following the Red Raiders’ last home game on Nov. 29.
“We are obviously very excited about the plans to expand the east side of the stadium,” said Chancellor Hance. “Our athletic teams bring important recognition to the great things happening at Texas Tech University, and with our football program in the national spotlight this season, now is the perfect opportunity to get all our friends and supporters behind this project.”
The design of the new building will compliment the Spanish Renaissance style of the stadium’s west side. With the addition of more than 500 club seats and more than 20 new suites, capacity at Jones AT&T Stadium should grow by about 1,000 seats. The new building is expected to open for the 2010 football season.
“The growth of Texas Tech in the last eight years has been astounding,” said Mike Leach, Red Raider head coach. “I don’t know of any school that has had the opportunity to expand its stadium three times in that period. A lot of credit has to go to the football players, coaches, athletics and university administration for our progress.”
“The completion of the east side will make Jones AT&T Stadium one of the most attractive football facilities in the country,” said Gerald Myers, athletic director. “It will be a source of pride for students, alumni and fans.”
