When Dylan Gandy strapped on the pads at Super Bowl XL, the second-year Indianapolis Colt became the thirteenth Red Raider to participate in the big game, and the first since Anthony Lynn did it with the Denver Broncos in 1999.
Texas Tech players have been on 11 Super Bowl championship rosters, dating back to Super Bowl I, when former Tech All-Americans E.J. Holub and Donny Anderson faced off in the inaugural game. The loss for Holub and the Kansas City Chiefs marks the only loss by a Red Raider in a Super Bowl. Anderson and Holub made repeat performances in Super Bowl II and Super Bowl IV with the Chiefs and Green Bay Packers, respectively, while Lynn also played in the game twice in 1998 and 1999.
Blake Turner played in Super Bowl III with the New York Jets and Curtis Jordan was on Washington’s championship team in 1983. Ted Watts made an appearance with the L.A. Raiders the following year in 1984, while Maury Buford was a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears, famous for the Super Bowl Shuffle. Timmy Smith and the Redskins won in 1988, followed by Lin Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys in 1993.
Holub holds the distinction of being the only player in Super Bowl history to start on both sides of the ball. In Super Bowl I, Holub lined up on the defensive side, and started at center three years later in Super Bowl IV. Holub (’67, ’70), Anderson (’68) and Smith (’88) are the only Red Raiders to start a Super Bowl.
Two Red Raiders still appear in the Super Bowl records book – Timmy Smith (most rushing yards, 204, Washington vs. Denver, Super Bowl XXII) and Lin Elliott (tied for most single-game PATs, 7, Dallas vs. Buffalo, Super Bowl XXVII).
