Region Three ODP Team's 2-1 Victory Over Mexico Highlights Event

Serving as the head coach for the Olympic Development Program Region Three U-19 (under age 19) team, Texas Tech soccer head coach Neil McGuire led the squad to a 2-1 victory over the U-20 (under 20) Mexican National Team in a showcase exhibition on July 7 in Montevallo, Ala.

McGuire and his Region Three team faced off against the Mexican squad three separate times during the week-long tryout process, with two of the three games being scrimmages to utilize and evaluate many players.

In the showcase game, both teams pitted their very best players against one another and the Region 3 team came away with a 2-1 victory. Trailing 1-0 with less than 15 minutes to play, McGuire switched the teams formation from a 4-4-2 to a 3-4-3 to apply greater pressure on the opponents. This strategy resulted in two late goals to propel the Region 3 team to victory.

The Olympic Development Program, which is separated into four regions across the United States, is designed to mold and develop the best talent the country has to offer. The ultimate goal is to keep the Women's National Team the best team in the world in women's soccer.

Region 3 includes talent pools in the states of Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Texas Tech soccer will begin the 2005 campaign on Aug. 26 against TCU, in Fort Worth, Texas.
