Cheech Marin Opens 2014-2015 Season of Presidential Lecture & Performance Series
While primarily known as an actor, a director, a performer, and one half of the hilariously irreverent duo of Cheech and Chong, Cheech Marin has developed what is arguably the finest private collection of Chicano art in the United States. Marin spoke to a sell-out crowd at the Allen Theatre on October 3 as the Presidential Lecture & Performance Series opened its 2014-2015 season with Marin’s multi-media presentation Chicano Art: Perspectives of an Art Advocate.
In conjunction with the Presidential Lecture and Performance Series and Mr. Marin’s visit, TTU School of Art’s Landmark Gallery mounted the exhibition Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection, which continues on display from October 3 through December 14 to record breaking crowds.
The College of Visual & Performing Arts honored Cheech Marin as a Visiting Scholar, an appointment made possible by the generosity of the Maegene Nelson Visiting Scholar Program in Cross-Disciplinary Arts. Additionally, community outreach for this program was funded in part by a grant from the Sybil B. Harrington Endowment for the Arts of the Lubbock Area Foundation.
