Dr. Amy Heuman.
Dr. Mark Gring will be assuming the role of Graduate Director for the Department.
Dr. David Williams will be assuming the role as Basic Course Director for the Public Speaking course.
Spring 2003
Sonya Ralston won 1st place in the nation in Persuasive Speaking and 5th place in Impromptu Speaking. The TTU Forensic team finished 20th in the nation this year. This is the 6th consecutive year that the team has finished in the top 20 in the nation. Congratulations to Dr. Harlow, Ric, and the team for a job well done!

Spring 2002
David Williams accepted a new role as Graduate Director this spring.
After a very successful year as IDOF, Ric Shafer will be assuming a new role as Assistant Director of Forensics in Fall 2002. He will be working closely with our new Director of Forensics, Bill Harlow, to continue our tradition of excellence in forensics.
Due to health reasons, John Bliese had to retire early. He has been a part of the departmental family for a long time and will definitely be missed.
Mark Gring and Patrick Hughes, Texas Tech University, received a grant from the TTU Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center for $4,161 to support their project entitled "Strengthening Qualitative Social Research in Communication Studies." (2002)

NCA Convention 2001 - Several of our faculty and TAs attended the National Communication Association Convention in Atlanta (November).

Ric Shafer will be joining us this fall as the Interim Director of Forensics. Ric has an extensive background in forensics and is very familiar with success in national competitions. We are pleased to welcome Ric to our department.
We are excited to welcome Dr. Mark Gring to our
department this fall. Dr. Gring received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State
University and will be serving as our basic course director for Public Speaking.
Please check our display case to see Dr. John Bliese's new book,
entitled "The Greening of Conservative America." Congratulations

We will be initiating a departmental chapter
of Lambda Pi Eta this fall. Lambda Pi Eta is the official National
Communication Honor Society for undergraduate students. Dr. Patrick
Hughes will be serving as faculty sponsor. More news regarding this will
be forthcoming.

Patrick Hughes and David Williams, Texas Tech University, received a grant from the AFA-NIET Research Enhancement Fund for $2500 to support their project entitled "Family Communication Patterns and Competitor Satisfaction: A National Survey of Collegiate Forensics." (2004)
Mark Gring, Texas Tech University, received a grant from the Texas Education Agency for $22,500. This grant supports his work on the TEA textbook project. (2003)
Juliann Scholl, Texas Tech University, received a grant from the TTU Research Enhancement Fund for $840 to support her coauthored project entitled "Gaining Access to Student Health Information." (2003)
Patrick Hughes and David Williams, Texas Tech University, received a grant from the TTU Research Enhancement Fund for $800 to support their project entitled "Family Communication Patterns." (2003)

his pilot grant proposal for Classroom Instruction. (1997)
K. David Roach, Texas Tech University, was awarded a $1200
grant from the TTU Research Enhancement Fund to facilitate his
research on "The Effects of Teaching Assistant Communication
Apprehension on Student Learning and Ratings of Instruction"
(1997).
K. David Roach, Texas Tech University, was awarded a $3000
grant from the TTU Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center for
his project entitled: "Development of Instruction for Student
Use of Computer Assisted Multimedia Presentations in Communication
Courses" (1997).
David E. Williams, Texas Tech University, was awarded a
$700 grant from the TTU Research Enhancement Fund to facilitate
his research on "A Nationwide Assessment of Intercollegiate
Debate Participants" (1997).
Brian R. McGee & David E. Williams,
Texas Tech University, were awarded $1542 from the TTU Research Enhancement Fund
for their project entitled: "The Rhetoric of Place:
Constituting Community on the South Plains" (1999).
