Application Materials

□ Application (required) Complete the Texas Tech University Costa Rica application at https://applynow.texastech.edu/CostaRica
□ Application Fee (required) The application fee is $75 that is nonrefundable and non-available.
□ Transcripts (required)

Submit original or attested copies of high school transcripts and any exit examinations taken. May be sent electronically, but if you are admitted to Texas Tech University- Costa Rica, you must submit OFFICIAL FINAL TRANSCRIPTS upon arrival.

NOTE: Required documents must be provided in English. If official English translations are not supplied by the applicant's institution(s), the applicant must provide a translation done by an American Translators Association-certified translator. A list of ATA-certified translators is available online here.

□ English Proficiency Exams

Texas Tech University Costa Rica requires students from non-English speaking countries to demonstrate the ability to speak, write and understand, the English language. Students must submit one of the following to show proof of English proficiency:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language; TOFEL)

The minimum TOEFL score required is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version). The TOEFL score must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS); Texas Tech University's institutional code is B100. TOEFL scores are valid for only two years.

IELTS (International English Language Testing Service; IELTS)

The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version; IELTS General Training results are not acceptable.
There is no IELTS institution code for Texas Tech University. IELTS scores are valid for only two years.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic; PTE Academic)

The minimum required PTE Academic score is 60. PTE General and PTE.
Young Learners results are not acceptable. There is no PTE. Academic institution code for Texas Tech University. PTE Academic scores are valid for only two years.

Cambridge CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; CPE)

The minimum required Cambridge CPE grade is C. There is no institutional code for the Cambridge CPE. The Cambridge CPE is valid for life.

Cambridge CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English ; CAE)

The minimum required Cambridge CAE grade is B. There is no institutional code for the Cambridge CAE. The Cambridge CAE is valid for life.

Duolingo English Test (Online examination)

The minimum required Duolingo score is 71-90. There is no institutional code for Duolingo. Scores are reported within 48 hours and are valid for two years.

**Waivers for English Proficiency Exams**

For English language proficiency will be granted to students who:
▪ achieve a score of 500 on the SAT Writing and Reading or a 21 on the ACT English section, or,
▪ receive a grade of C or better on the IB Diploma in English or a C or better on the A-level GCE in English (not English as a Second Language, English Literature, etc.) of English language proficiency:

□ College Entrance Exam Scores (only required for engineering and computer science)

Engineering and Computer Science: Class Rank and SAT or ACT scores are required. Students graduating from an accredited high school must submit the required combination of high school class rank and college entrance test scores.

Admission to TTU-CR engineering programs is evaluated according to the criteria shown in this PDF. Mathematics and RHIM : SAT and ACT scores are NOT required. However, they may be useful for placement, to waive the Texas Success Initiative Program assessment requirement (see TSI section below), or as proof of English proficiency. Note: The highest section scores from multiple tests on the ACT and SAT will be used to maximize score known as Superscoring.


TSI (after being admitted)

Although the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is not a requirement for admission eligibility, admitted students are required to complete TSI assessment of college readiness prior to enrollment in any courses (TSI exam fee is $50).

Prior to taking the TSI, students must do a pre-assessment online. The exam consists of Mathematics, Reading and Writing sections.
