Short Biography

Darrell Bateman is currently the Chief Information Security Officer at City Bank in Lubbock, TX. He is responsible for developing and implementing information security strategy for the bank and its thousands of customers. He was formerly Vice President for Information Technology and Information Security Officer at Texas Tech University and has over 35 years of experience in Information Security and Information Technology. He holds a Masters in Management Information Systems and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Texas Tech University. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) as well as a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Darrell sees information security and privacy as pivotal issues in light of the increasing digitization of business and society.

Darrell was among the first graduates in the Texas Tech Computer Science program. Originally from Houston, Texas, Darrell has lived in Lubbock since first coming to Texas Tech in 1979. In his 30+ years in Information Technology at the University, he was instrumental in the continuing transformation of campus technology and services, from its beginning with mainframe computers, through the development and expansion of campus-wide networks, the deployment of the first personal computers, the introduction of the Internet, and eventually to its current state-of-the-art networking and computing infrastructure combined with multiple cloud-based services. After retiring from Texas Tech in 2015, Darrell began a second career in the private sector at City Bank, and is now helping the bank evolve its information security program as it expands its online and digital services to customers across the state.

Darrell was inducted into the Computer Science Academy in 2015 and became a member of the External Advisory Board in 2016. When not working or keeping up with family activities, Darrell enjoys travel, golf, playing poker, and wine making.
