About Santa Fe Opera Spring Tour

The Santa Fe Opera's Apprentice Program for Singers has been helping young singers establish their careers since Santa Fe Opera founder John Crosby created the program as part of the Opera's debut season in 1957. James Morris, Samuel Ramey, Franco Farina, and Neil Shicoff are among early apprentices. More recent alumni, such as Celena Shafer, Michelle de Young, Beth Clayton, William Burden, Kurt Streit, and Joyce DiDonato, are now enjoying international careers.

Every year, more than 1,000 young performers audition for the 40 or so available positions. Those dedicated young opera singers who are selected participate in a rigorous program of training and performances and each year they take their act on the road as part The Spring Opera Tour, a project of The Santa Fe Opera's Education and Community Programs Department. Touring dozens of cities throughout New Mexico and Texas, Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singers perform a wide-ranging repertory of arias, songs of the season, musical theater selections and sacred music to more than 18,000 enthralled audience members.
