Texas Tech University

The AVID First Year Experience (AFYE) program is designed to provide supplemental academic support to students entering into their first year at Texas Tech University. The components of the program are created to strengthen the skills that enable a first-year student to effectively deal with the academic, cultural and financial challenges that college creates, while also assisting in the transition into their second-year of college.

How the AFYE program works:

Students enroll into AVID IS1102 course (1 hour elective) that will introduce students to the use of the WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading) strategies and the AVID system. In addition to enrolling in the AVID IS 1102 course, students will participate in the AVID First Year Experience Program.

Benefits of participating in the program will include:

  • Social Engagement Events
  • Academic Workshops
  • Peer Mentoring (outside of classroom)
  • Free Calculator Rentals
  • Textbook Lending Library
  • Community Service Opportunities
  • Free School Supplies
  • Scholarship Opportunities
