A Day in My Shoes was established by the Office of Academic Enrichment. The purpose of the program is to promote a culture of connectedness for both students and teachers to feel comfortable and confident in achieving educational goals. Students and teachers are challenged, yet encouraged to share their background and experiences with one another to embrace their imperfections and inadequacies. Students and teachers are encouraged to be creative and to boldly express their lives. The use of imagery, poetry, and other literary devices are also encouraged. To strengthen this experience, in collaboration with Lubbock ISD AVID, the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the School of Theater and Dance, students participated in academic enrichment activities that included writer’s workshops, readings, poetry nights, featured artists and authors, and other “sharing” events.
Throughout this book you will find a group of bold and ambitious AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students who have learned to weave a complex web of connections among themselves, their subjects, and other activities. This is a compilation of Voices of Hope. In every voice there is detail, and in every detail there is a distinctiveness that portrays the existing or possible realities that we face. However, if we truly listen, we will experience a sense of freedom, gratitude, and an abundance of potential in each shared voice.Begin Reading
