K-12 Outreach & Engagement

K-12 Outreach and Engagement through the Office of Community Engagement provides several programs throughout the year. Our programs include: Mini University Day, Teens of the Month, College Readiness, Reality Check,  and Red Raider Scavenger Hunts.  Contact Sarah Shiver at 806-742-7017 or by email for more information about K-12 Outreach and Engagement opportunities.

Mini University Day

Mini-University Day is a program for students in grades K-5. The program plants the seed of college into the minds of small children, and it illustrates college as a viable option. The program aims to get the children excited about college by discussing what college is and having TTU cheerleaders, Mascot, and pom squad perform.

Teens of the Month

The Office of Community Engagement sends rewards to the Teens of the Month for their significant achievement. The packets included a coupon from Mr. Gatti’s Pizza works, Texas Tech University certificate of achievement, and a one-day-pass to the Texas Tech University Recreational Center.

College Readiness

College Readiness is a program for students in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. This program provides a series of workshops that discuss how to prepare for college and what college is like.

Reality Check

Reality Check is something like the Game of Life where the students are given a career, a budget, and a family. Each student is given the opportunity to buy child care, food, clothes, transportation, etc, on a budget depending on their chosen occupation. The idea is that this will help bring to reality that LIFE is not a GAME, and show that higher education is necessary.  Play Reality Check online to see what it's all about, then contact us to have it at your school or to play the game at Texas Tech: http://www.cdr.state.tx.us/RealityCheck/.

 Red Raider Scavenger Hunts

Red Raider Scavenger Hunts are specially designed for grades 4-10. This is a fun way for your students to become familiar with the Texas Tech University campus by searching for campus landmarks. Each Scavenger Hunt begins on the north side of the Administration Building (the side facing Memorial Circle) and lasts from 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

We greatly appreciate your interest in visiting Texas Tech University.  Due to the high number of tour requests received, we are only able to provide a limited number of tours throughout the year.  The Texas Tech Visitors Center is happy to provide tours for grades 11 & 12 and the Texas Tech Office of Community Engagement provides special Red Raider Scavenger Hunt tours for grades 4-10.  We will work with your organization to facilitate a tour, but space is limited and granted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If we are unable to accommodate your group on a guided Scavenger Hunt, please download the Scavenger Hunt map by clicking here and feel free to have a self guided Scavenger Hunt adventure.

At this time we are unable to provide guided tours to 3rd grade or below.  For 3rd grade and below classes, we recommend that you take the self-guided iWalk Texas Tech tour or self-guided map tour.  You can find more information about the self-guided tours at: www.visit.ttu.edu/iwalk/ or www.visit.ttu.edu/iwalk/map.pdf
