College and Faculty Funding

College Diversity Development Grant (CDDG)

The purpose of the CDDG is to develop and strengthen partnerships with colleges to leverage funding for programs that have a strong impact on the quality of teaching and learning about diversity. Through the grant the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Cross-Cultural Center assist colleges in implementing, strengthening and/or expanding programs to further link the academic and diversity mission of the college to the university’s mission.

Faculty Diversity Development Awards (FDDA)

The purpose of the FDDA is to provide junior faculty for scholarship and creative activities necessary for promotion to tenure. The award supports tenure track faculty who contribute to the diversity of Texas Tech.

For 2008-2009 two colleges were awarded $5000 grants:

College of Engineering – Diversity Alliance

The grant will assist in establishing the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Jr. Chapter High School Program (SHPE). SHPE Jr. Chapter will assist pre-college students by providing scholarships, mentors, tutors, and other resources to overcome persistent educational barriers and encourage students to pursue degrees in areas of engineering, math, science, and technology.

College of Mass Communications

The grant will assist the college in developing a recruitment program to target high school students from underrepresented groups (African American and Hispanic) in West Texas. The project team will identify students from schools within a 150 mile radius of Lubbock, who are interested in studying the mass communications field and invite them to the Tech campus for one or two day visits in fall 2008.

For 2008-2009 five junior faculty were awarded $2000 grants:

Dr. Mary Frances Agnello – College of Education Secondary Education/Department of Curriculum and Instruction The award will assist in the development of a College Entrance Examination Preparatory Program Camp to be held at Estacado High School. The curriculum will consist of language, math, social studies, and science skills.

Dr. Claudia Cogliser – Rawls College of Business Area of Management The award will assist in funding a study on diversity in leader-follower relationships. The study is based on the results of a study on the direct relationship between race and leader-member exchange (LMX).

Dr. Sarah Kulkofsky – College of Human Sciences Department of Human Development and Family Studies The award will assist in funding a pilot study investigating cultural differences in the reported functions parent-child joint reminiscence and identifying how these differences in beliefs about the functions of reminiscence translate into differences parent and child behaviors.

Dr. Miguel Levario – College of Arts & Sciences Department of History The award will fund a research trip to further expand and strengthen the faculty member’s book on the Santa Ysabel massacre and the resulting race riot in El Paso, Texas. The research will be conducted in the National Archives in College Park, Maryland.

Dr. Sylvia Niehuis – College of Human Sciences Department of Human Development and Family Studies The award will assist in funding a pilot study to examine the development of commitment to marriage in a local Hispanic sample to examine the following general research question: How does commitment to marriage develop over time?
