The College of Architecture has focused on faculty and alumni development and achieving accreditation. Included in the dean’s long range plan is a goal to develop more study aboard programs for both faculty and students.
When staff position openings occur, efforts will be made to attract a diverse applicant pool.
The College of Architecture is committed to the values of
- mutual respect, cooperation and communication;
- creativity, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence;
- community service, leadership, and public accountability;
- diversity and the “1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure” of the AAUP;
- Hanover principles – Design for Sustainability
The College will be an international learning community; engaging in exemplary architectural teaching, research, scholarship, creative endeavor, and service.
- Educate its students for effective practice in architecture
- Supplement sound training by nurturing the whole person within an understanding of architecture as a broad humanistic and scientific discipline.
- Produce leaders able to meet the demands of a changing profession, and whose technical skills will be complemented by personal vision, ethical persuasiveness and entrepreneurial drive.
The College has made support of pre-architecture programs a significant part of its strategic plan with the commitment to develop a four-year program in El Paso already generating applications from local community college students.
Additional programs further demonstrate our commitment to diversify our student body and fulfill the multiple roles architecture plays in our culture.
- Community Design Laboratory - Since 1995, the Community Design Laboratory has completed over 50 projects to assist local communities, including affordable housing, downtown redevelopment initiatives, educational and governmental facilities and community centers.
- Habitat for Humanity Texas Tech Chapter - Tech Habitat assists in the construction of new homes for the Lubbock area families in need, providing students, faculty and staff an enriching and character building experience.
- Study Abroad - Students participating in one of our many study abroad programs submitted an urban renewal proposal to Panama’s ministry of housing. The El Chorrillo Nuevo plan will unclog traffic corridors and provide resident-friendly housing while cleaning up fragmented block structures.
- A magnet program for engineering and architecture professions at Estacado High School and aligned quad 4 elementary and middle schools - This program is available to any student in Lubbock Independent School District. The ethnically diverse student population interfaces with Texas Tech University faculty and graduate students, increasing the awareness of options beyond high school.
- 2+2 articulation agreements with San Antonio College and El Paso Community College – The College curriculum includes a required diversity course for all students. It is aimed at raising awareness of issues related to ethnicity and gender equity within American culture. This course helps to create a more tolerant environment within the College, which will translate into increased retention and a more comfortable environment for prospective diverse students.
