Law

The Mission of Texas Tech University School of Law is to educate and train men and women for the practice of law in the Twenty-First Century; to engage in productive, effective scholarship both within our academic community and in the larger academic community throughout our state and nation; and to render public service.

  • The administration and faculty of the School of Law recognize the need for increasing the number of minority group members in the legal profession. Moreover, because Texas Tech University is a state school, and Texas is such a tremendously diverse state, Texas Law officials embrace both a legal and a moral imperative to ensure access to legal education for Texas citizens across that spectrum of diversity. The following sets forth steps to help attain this goal.

  • In spite of the City’s isolated geographic location and limited minority legal professionals, the Law School encourages and fosters relationships between current students and minority practitioners. For the 2003 orientation program for entering students. Oliver Mitchell, an African-American and Assistant General Counsel for Ford Motors, delivered a presentation focusing on the challenges of a multi-cultural society. Students may also take advantages of lunches/dinners coordinated by the Law School with local minority bar members.

  • In preparing for the AALS Recruitment Conference, Personnel Committee members should take special note of minority candidates.

  • At the AALS conference, a member of the Personnel Committee should try to attend functions sponsored by Minority Law Professor Section and visit its hospitality suite.

  • In addition to listing vacancies in the AALS Register, the Personnel Committee should list positions in publications such as the TEXAS BAR JOURNAL. Such publications may reach potential candidates who are unfamiliar with the AALS hiring process.

  • All job announcements should be listed on minority professor lists including the Minority Professor List Serve, the Latino Law Professor List Serve, and the South Western’s Minority Faculty Program List Serve.

  • Members of the Personnel Committee should make personal contacts in an effort to reach minority candidates. For example, contacts should be made with persons working with minority bar associations in Texas.
