Diversity Initiatives
- Texas Tech University's "Strategic Plan, A Clear Vision" is on-going.
- Texas Tech has formed over 30 partnerships with community colleges and established urban outreach centers in El Paso, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and Austin.
- Other TTU initiatives place emphasis on cultural aspects. Since February 2002 a greatly expanded program of events honoring African American culture and history have been offered. In conjunction with Hispanic Culture Awareness Month, organizations such as the Hispanic Student Society along with various departments have sponsored campus activities celebrating the Latin culture.
- In the fall 2004 a new Latino Hispanic Faculty & Staff Association was formed.
- The division for Enrollment Management was established in 1998 and is charged with making a unified effort to recruit and retain qualified students. Diversity in the student body is an important recruiting goal as well.
- The President's Office has assisted in establishing the Teaching Academy, an organization of award winning teachers at Texas Tech. The Academy honors teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom. The Academy also co-sponsors programs on effective teaching. It recently opened the Teaching Learning Technology Center, an office dedicated to superior teaching.
- A Special Assistant to the President for Diversity was hired in Fall 2004. This office is charged with making a unified effort to recruit and retain diverse qualified faculty and staff.
- In the spring 2005 The President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Awards were created through the Office of the Special Assistant for Diversity to annually recognize the efforts of faculty and staff to engage in activities that promote the value of diversity and the importance of equity in the University.
- In December 2004 the Lauro Cavazos and Ophelia Powell-Malone Mentoring Program (Mentor Tech) became part of the Office of the President under direct supervision of the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity.
