Meet Our Team

Lou Ortiz, J.D.

Lou is our new MVP Director. He served an Air Force career spanning over 30 years as an aircraft logistics and maintenance officer, staff officer, and legislative liaison. He previously served TTU as Research Associate, Assistant Vice President for Research, and Special Assistant to the President. His education background includes a BS from Black Hills State University, MPA from Troy State, JD from the Texas Tech School of Law, and post-graduate national security fellowship at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Lou enjoys travelling with his wife Cheryl. He is dedicated to supporting all generations of veterans and served as President of the Texas South Plains Honor Flight non-profit and is currently a member of the City of Lubbock Veteran’s Advisory Committee.

Debra Crosby, M.A.
Assistant Director & VA Certifying Official

Debra provides leadership and oversight to the MVP department. Debra is the liaison between the US Department of Veteran Affairs, the state's approving agency-the Texas Veterans Commission, and Texas Tech University.

Debra has over 30 years of experience in the collegiate setting, most of which are in veterans' education. She has served as President on the board of the Texas Association of Collegiate Veteran Program Officials (TACVPO). She currently serves on the board of the Western Association of Veteran Education Specialists (WAVES). Her educational background includes an Associate of Arts from South Plains College, a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas Tech University.

Debra enjoys spending time with her daughter, Jordan, and their bird, Baretta and cat, Ivy. She loves to watch movies and Texas Tech football. She is honored to serve those who keep America safe and free!

Bernice Flett
Unit Coordinator

Bernice Flett has been a dedicated TTU employee since 1994. She currently serves as a Unit Coordinator in the Military and Veterans Programs Office. Ms. Flett can assist with Federal and State of Texas educational benefits. Bernice's father served 21 years in the Air Force. She has personal experience in transition issues and can relate to veterans and their family members transitioning to civilian life.

Ms. Flett has been a registered licensed massage therapist since 2003 specializing in Swedish massage, Hot Stone Therapy, and Deep Tissue massage. She has obtained over 300 hours of massage instruction and is currently pursuing training in additional massage modalities. Bernice plans to pursue a degree in Human Development and Family Studies at Texas Tech in the future.

Jeremy Sedeno, M.Ed.
Unit Coordinator

Jeremy Sedeno is a Unit Coordinator Recruiting & Outreach Specialist here at the MVP office. Jeremy served seven years in the United States Army as a Combat Medic (91W). He Served in Iraq from 2005-2006 in Operation Iraqi Freedom lll, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Medical Badge for providing treatment under fire. Upon being medically discharged in 2007, Jeremy enrolled at Texas Tech where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Ethnic Studies as well as a Masters in Secondary education. Jeremy’s dedication to education and to his brothers and Sisters-in-arms has led him to Texas Tech University, where he assists veterans and dependents of veterans in utilizing their education benefits and encouraging them to pursue a greater path.

Jeremy enjoys spending time with his kids and his German shepherd (Gambit). Texas Tech football is a Saturday must watch. He is very honored and humble to be serving his fellow Veterans and thanks them for their service and sacrifice.

Eric Washington
Unit Coordinator

Eric Washington is a Unit coordinator here at the MVP office. As a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Eric is dedicated to helping fellow veterans succeed in their transitions out of the military. Eric served 4 years with the Marines as an Amphibious Assault Crewman. He served in Afghanistan from 2011-2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Eric is the staff advisor for the Veterans Association at Texas Tech and an active member of the Faculty and Staff Veterans Association. Eric will graduate this December with a degree in Technical Communication form Texas Tech.

Eric enjoys traveling with his wife Kyra, and is an avid Texas Tech football fan. He is passionate about veteran issues and serving those who have served.
