About Economics

Economics is the study of how individuals make choices in the face of scarcities.

The decisions that consumers and managers of firms make result in market determined prices and quantities for the goods and services produced in an economy. These market outcomes are the primary focus of economic analysis. Persons trained in the study of markets and the determination of prices and quantities are always in demand. Economists use this market oriented approach to study such diverse topics as inflation, unemployment, business cycles, interest rates, international trade, the banking system, the structure of industry, the legal system, regulation, public finance, natural resources, and the stock market, to name just a few.

Career Opportunities

Economics provides an excellent background for general managerial, administrative, and analyst positions, especially for jobs in financial institutions, governments, and companies engaged in international trade.  Economics is also an excellent preparation for law school or graduate studies in business, public administration, or further study in economics.
