Why did you choose Texas Tech?
I chose Texas Tech because two former Red Raider have been huge influences in my life. If going to Tech could endow me with even an iota of their strength, confidence, or intelligence, sign me up! Plus, not to brag or anything but Tech has a wonderful student teaching program. Seriously our Dean, Mr. Scott Ridley is constantly traveling to other places to talk about implementing parts of our program into others! So why go somewhere that only has pieces of TechTeach, when we have the whole TechTeach right here!
Why do you want to become a teacher?
I would like to be a teacher because I love helping a child achieve his or her light bulb moment. Mathematics is a notoriously difficult subject for many students. By the time they reach middle school they feel like they just aren’t good at math and they hate it. If I can be a teacher who helps a child understand a mathematics concept or formula where they once felt they were doomed to fail, I just won’t know how to act. My endorphins would just jump off the charts! Helping people succeed is a passion of mine.
What is your favorite place on campus and why?
My favorite place on campus is the Student Union Building. There are so many things to do and buy in one place. Also the Student Union is a place where no matter your classification or major, you can all join and have fun. There are so many things that happen at the Student Union from Step Shows, Tech Activities, Informational Sessions, Graduation Ceremonies, and so much more.
What has been your favorite Education course and why?
My favorite Education course is now EDBL 3335 Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students. I know it is a mouthful but it isn’t really that bad. This class is teaching me how to be a more efficient teacher to not only the student who are fluent in English. I am learning to be culturally aware and not culturally exclusive. This class teaches students how to step out of their comfort zone and reach students who may not ask for help, because they don’t know they need it. I am also enjoying the chosen textbooks for this class also, shocker.
If you could magically learn a new language what would it be?
I would love to learn Sign Language. Sign Language is a language that you think you will never need, but need to know. I feel a deep respect for people who know Sign Language. In my mind it is like the superhero of languages. It is there because someone lost or never had a way to communicate verbally. There was a problem and sign language fixed it. I would like to learn Sign Language because for one you never know when you may need it. I would rather be prepared than unprepared. For two, if I learned Sign Language, no one would be able to tell me my accent sucks.
What would the movie of your life be called and what celebrity would play you in the
What a weird question. I don’t know. I just want you to know, I googled funny movie titles to find something. My movie title would be “Oddly Beautiful: Perfectly Me”. I chose this title because although I do not do everything traditionally, I do everything for a reason and with purpose. I realize I may be odd, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So my odd little soul is beautiful! At least to me. I may not be perfect but I am striving for more, more knowledge, more experience, more something. The movie would be life journey. A journey of finding self, value, and determination. I would have Angela Bassett play me, or even Viola Davis. Not because they look like me, I look like Tami Roman. They always play their role to the best of their ability!
