Why did you choose Texas Tech?
The moment I stepped foot on campus I knew it was the right place for me. I came from a very small high school with a graduating class of only 84 students so moving to a large University was intimidating. However, Texas Tech has a very tight-knit community. This University is filled with passionate people who are so proud to call themselves Red Raiders every day! That passion inspired me to take a leap of faith and I have not regretted a single moment. Texas Tech has provided me with so many opportunities. The Teacher Education Program they offer is world class and has been recognized nationally and internationally. I feel prepared for my future and am so thankful for all Texas Tech has offered me during my time here! Wreck ‘Em Tech!
Why do you want to become a teacher?
My greatest passion is helping others, especially children. I believe they have such a beautiful innocence and drive to learn. In high school, I had the opportunity to work at the Children’s Museum of Houston throughout the summers. It was such a positive experience that I realized I wanted to continue working with children and teaching them for the rest of my life! I especially have a passion for working with students who are different. For that reason I am also looking forward to working with Special Education and English Language Learner students!
What is your favorite place on campus and why?
I love all of the public art on campus, but my favorite statue would have to be Headwaters behind the Education building. Most students refer to it as ‘The Hands of Knowledge’. It is my favorite place on campus because the fountain and statues are a beautiful metaphor describing life’s journey in regards to education. It’s a great place to read, relax, and take pictures!
What has been your favorite Education course and why?
I really enjoyed my Language Literacy Acquisition and Foundations of Reading Instruction courses during junior year. The instructor was phenomenal and provided us with so many resources to use in the future. I truly transformed as a teacher through that course and was able to work with two students every week on developing their literacy. Seeing their growth over the semester was incredible. It was a great experience!
If you could magically learn a new language what would it be?
I would have to choose Spanish. This would be a huge asset as a future teacher due to the increasing rate of English Language Learner and bilingual students that are in our classrooms. It would make home-to-school communication smoother with many families. I believe if parents know there is someone who they can communicate with, their involvement will increase rapidly.
What would the movie of your life be called and what celebrity would play you in the movie?
The movie of my life would be titled, Be the Best You Can Be. I would chose this title because my father has said that phrase to me my entire life so I hold it very close to my heart. If I had to choose a celebrity to play me it would be Anne Hathaway. She seems like a genuinely good person who can be serious but also goofy. I also view her as a very positive role model.
