Graduate Study in English

The Graduate Program in English at Texas Tech University is a vibrant community of scholars and teachers committed to intellectual achievement in literature studies, creative writing, and linguistics. Students may pursue the M.A. in English or Ph.D. in English and focus their studies in several ways depending upon interests and professional goals. M.A. students may study literature generally or concentrate in a particular field of literary study. Ph.D. students must demonstrate proficiency in several fields, but they must also specialize in an area of their choosing--a particular literary or theoretical area, or a specific genre of creative writing--through coursework, qualifying examinations, and the dissertation. Notable areas of specialized study in the Department of English include the following:

Students in our M.A. and Ph.D. programs participate in our Professional Development Curriculum, designed to help students reach the next phase of their professional lives by providing them with information about job hunting, scholarly publication, professional organizations, and career management strategies. Recent M.A. graduates have gone on to top doctoral programs across the country, and our Ph.D. recipients have competed successfully for tenure-track positions in a difficult market.

Nearly 100% of our full-time students receive financial support as teaching assistants, editorial assistants, technology assistants, and assistant program coordinators, or in other roles suited to their professional development.

We believe strongly in the excellence of our programs, faculty, students, and facilities--so strongly, that each March we invite admitted students to visit us for Recruitment Weekend at our expense. We pay for your travel, accommodations, and meals, and you get the opportunity to come meet our faculty and students and see just what we have to offer. Over the last four years, more than 85% of students who attended our Recruitment Weekend decided ultimately to study at Texas Tech. That speaks volumes about what we do here.

So if you want to study literature, creative writing, or linguistics in a program with outstanding faculty and talented peers from all over the world, visit our admissions page. Become part of a program on the rise.
